OneDrive for Windows Phone: FAQ

Here are the basics about using the OneDrive app for Windows Phone. Download the app.

OneDrive for Windows Phone 8 or Windows Phone 8.1

Add a OneDrive for Business account

You can now add OneDrive for Business accounts to the OneDrive app for Windows Phone 8.1. (To see if you have Windows Phone 8.1, open Settings and tap about.) For more, see What is OneDrive for Business?

To add a OneDrive for Business account, open the OneDrive app, tap the three horizontal bars in the upper-left corner, tap Add OneDrive for Business, and then enter the email address and password you use for your company, school, or other organization. For you to sign in to OneDrive for Business, your organization needs to have a qualifying SharePoint Online or Office 365 business subscription plan. You can't sign in with an account from an on-premises directory.

If you have a problem signing in with your OneDrive for Business account, try signing in at http://portal.office.com/onedrive or contact your IT department.

Save photos and videos to OneDrive

  • To learn how to move photos and videos on your phone to the OneDrive folder on your computer, see Sync photos and videos using my computer on the Windows Phone website.

  • To select photos or videos to add to OneDrive or OneDrive for Business, open the folder where you want to upload the items, tap add, tap the app you want to use (like Photos), tap the items you want to upload, and then tap done.

Share files and folders (personal OneDrive accounts only)

  1. In the OneDrive app, open the file or folder you want to share and tap share. To share multiple files or folders, tap select, tap the items, and then tap share.

  2. To give only specific people permission, choose invite people and then add the contacts. To get a link that you can paste in a message, choose share a link and then choose view only or edit. To download and attach the file, choose send files, and then choose the app you want to use.

Share files and folders (business OneDrive accounts only)

  1. In the OneDrive app, open the file or folder you want to share and tap share. To share multiple files or folders, tap select, tap the items, and then tap share.

  2. To download and attach the file, choose send files, and then choose the app you want to use.

Find the file you're looking for

You can search for text within files and even photos. To search for text in a file or photo, type the phrase you want in the Search box.

Share feedback on the OneDrive app

You can rate the OneDrive app, or get help, by shaking your device.

Change how files are sorted

  1. Open the OneDrive app.

  2. Open the folder you want to sort, tap "" (more), and then tap Sort by. You can sort by name, date, or size.

Switch between accounts

If you have Windows Phone 8.1, you can switch between a personal OneDrive account and a OneDrive for Business account, or between multiple OneDrive for Business accounts. To do this, open the app, tap the three horizontal bars in the upper-left corner, and then tap the account you want to use. Note that you can't use multiple personal accounts with the OneDrive app.

See how much storage space you have (personal OneDrive accounts only)

In the OneDrive app, tap the three horizontal bars in the upper-left corner, tap Settings, and then tap your personal account to see your total storage and space available.

Troubleshoot problems with the app

Make sure you've installed any available updates to the app. They'll be downloaded and installed automatically when you're on Wi-Fi. To see available updates that haven't downloaded:

  1. In Windows Phone 8.1, open the Store, tap "" (more), and then tap downloads.

  2. If the OneDrive app appears, tap it for more info, or tap Update to download the app immediately over your mobile network.

OneDrive for Windows Phone 7

Add a photo or video

  1. On your phone, find a photo or video you want to upload. To share a picture from an online album, you'll need to save it to your phone first. To do that, tap the picture, tap "" (more), tap save to phone, and then open it again from the Saved Pictures album.

  2. Press and hold the photo or video, tap share… and then tap SkyDrive (now called OneDrive).

  3. Add a caption if you want and then tap upload.

    Your photos will be uploaded at full resolution. To see these uploaded photos, in the OneDrive mobile app, tap Documents and then tap mobile uploads.

Share a file or folder

  1. In the OneDrive app, press and hold the file or folder you want to share.

  2. Choose if you want to send a link in email or copy the link to clipboard. Then choose if you want people to only be able to view the file or edit it also.

  3. If you chose to send the link via email, follow the instructions on the screen to share the file. If you chose to copy the link to clipboard, you can now paste it in an email, text, instant message, or social network to share it with someone.

Automatically save photos you take to OneDrive

  1. In the App list, tap Settings.

  2. Flick left to applications and then tap pictures + camera.

  3. Turn on Automatically upload to SkyDrive (now called OneDrive).

    Notes   You won't be able to upload pictures automatically to OneDrive if your phone has only 256 MB of RAM. Contact your phone manufacturer for more info.

    Pictures are uploaded at low resolution. To back up your pictures at full resolution, use the Zune software on your PC. To learn more, see Sync music, pictures, and videos. If you want to upload your pictures at full resolution, follow the steps described in "Add a photo or video".

Change the Microsoft account you use for OneDrive

In the OneDrive app, open the settings menu, tap sign out, and then sign back in with the account you want to use.

See how much storage space you have

In the OneDrive app, go to settings to see your total storage and space available.
