Object has no line or fill / Text box is empty

The object is one of the following:

  • An AutoShape that has no line or fill

  • A table that has no text in any table cell and no line or fill

  • A text box that contains no text and has no line or fill

Because the object has no visible content or formatting, it will not be visible when you print your publication or publish it to the Web.

To find and select the item, click the error message in the Design Checker task pane, click the arrow, and then click Go to this Item.

Automatic fix

For an object

Delete Object     Click this fix to delete the AutoShape or table.

For a text box

Add text     Click this fix to insert a cursor in the empty text box, and then type the text that you want.

Manual fix

If you don't want to delete the object, you can make it visible. If the object is an AutoShape, you can add a fill color or a line color.

If the object is a table, you can add table borders or a fill color. You can also add text to any or all of the table cells.

If the object is a text box, you can add text, or you can add a fill color or a line color. You can also delete the text box.

Apply a color fill to an AutoShape

  1. Select the AutoShape.

  2. On the Formatting toolbar, click the arrow next to Fill Color Button image , and then do one of the following:

    • Select the color that you want.

    • Click More Fill Colors, and then select the color and transparency options that you want.

Apply a line color to an AutoShape

  1. Select the AutoShape.

  2. On the Formatting toolbar, click the arrow next to Line Color Button image , and then do one of the following:

    • Select the color that you want.

    • Click More Outline Colors, and then select the color and transparency options that you want.

Add borders or fills to a table

  1. Select the cells that you want to change.

  2. Right-click the table, and then click Format Table on the shortcut menu.

  3. In the Format Table dialog box, click the Colors and Lines tab.

  4. Do one of the following:

    • To add a border, select a color under Line, and then enter a line weight. For additional border options, click BorderArt.

    • To add a fill or fill effects, click the arrow next to the Color box under Fill, and then select the options that you want.

Add text to a table

  1. Click in a table cell.

  2. Type the text that you want.

  3. Move to another table cell, and then type the text that you want in that cell.

    To move to the next table cell, press TAB. To move to the preceding table cell, press SHIFT+TAB.

Apply a color fill to the text box

  1. Select the text box.

  2. On the Formatting toolbar, click the arrow next to Fill Color Button image , and then do one of the following:

    • Select the color that you want.

    • Click More Fill Colors, and then select the color and transparency options that you want.

Apply a line color to the text box

  1. Select the text box.

  2. On the Formatting toolbar, click the arrow next to Line Color Button image , and then do one of the following:

    • Select the color that you want.

    • Click More Outline Colors, and then select the color and transparency options that you want.

Delete the text box

  • Right-click the text box, and then click Delete Object on the shortcut menu.
