To provide you with the best experience, Microsoft 365 for Mac, Office 2021 for Mac, and Office 2019 for Mac supports the three most recent major versions of Apple's macOS.

As of September 27, 2023, the three most recent major versions are macOS Sonoma, macOS Ventura, and macOS Monterey.

Note: As new major versions of macOS are made generally available, Microsoft will remove support for the oldest major version and support the newest and previous two major versions of macOS. Product functionality and feature availability may vary on older systems. For the best experience, use the latest major version of macOS along with the latest operating system updates.

For the most up-to-date macOS for your Microsoft 365 for Mac product, select your version below.

Starting with the October 2023 update (16.78) macOS Monterey or later is required to receive updates to Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and OneNote. If you continue with an older version of macOS, your Office apps will still work, but you'll no longer receive any updates including security updates.

Upgrading your operating system to macOS Monterey or later will allow Office updates to be delivered for your apps. Note that new installs of Microsoft 365 for Mac also requires macOS Monterey or later.

The September 2023 update (16.77) is the last build to support macOS Big Sur.

The October 2022 update (16.66) is the last build to support macOS Catalina 10.15.

What if I don't update macOS to a supported version?

If you’re on an unsupported version of macOS, your Office apps will still work but you would no longer receive any updates including security updates. For example, if you’re on macOS Monterey, but later you don’t update your macOS to a supported version when macOS Monterey is no longer supported, you won’t receive any updates of any kind.

As new major versions of macOS are released and older versions become unsupported, we highly recommend you continue to update your macOS to a supported version in order to receive mainstream support such as security updates as well as new features.

Is macOS Sonoma supported?

Yes. macOS Sonoma is supported starting with the September 2023 update (16.77). For the best experience with the new operating system, make sure that you have installed the latest updates for Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and OneNote.
