Manage list templates

Manage list templates

When you add a list to a SharePoint site, you're using a list template. SharePoint provides several list templates such as contact list, calendar, task list and more. You use these templates to create new lists for your pages and site.

Saving list templates let you reuse customized lists. A template saves fields, formulas, and formatting, and optionally, data as well. You can save a template of a custom list built from scratch, or one made from existing templates. Templates can be downloaded for archiving or uploaded to another site collection.

Important: SharePoint Online group-connected team sites do not currently support list templates. For other SharePoint Online sites, enable scripting to use list templates. For more info see Turn scripting capabilities on or off.

Limits for data in a list template

The default limit when saving list template with data is 10 MB. If you have site owner or admin permissions, you can set the limit to a maximum of 500MB. While you can set this amount, the actual usable amount is limited by the amount of memory and disk space on your server.

Saving a library as a template with a document set  is not supported. When a new library is created with a template containing a document set, you might encounter errors.

Use a list template in SharePoint

You can create new lists using your saved list template as you do any other template. List templates are stored in the template gallery, and appear with other apps and templates.

For more info on using list templates or list apps, see Create a list in SharePoint.
