The FAST Search property extraction feature identifies key information such as person names, company names, and geographic names/locations in documents. These properties are extracted from documents based on word lists and context rules, and help find out the "who", "what", "when" and "where" of each document.

The properties can be used to improve the search experience, for example by providing search result refinement based on the properties, or by highlighting the properties in the result summary or displaying meta information about the property in the result summary. In the Manage Property Extraction page, you can view the names of the property extractors that are defined, for example persons and companies. For each property extractor, the administrator can maintain an include list and an exclude list.
