The Leveling Delay field contains the amount of time that a task or assignment is to be delayed from its early start date as a result of resource leveling. Task leveling delay is expressed in elapsed duration units, while assignment leveling delay is expressed in regular duration units. No information is actually displayed in the Leveling Delay resource field; it merely makes the corresponding Leveling Delay assignment field information available.

There are several categories of Leveling Delay fields.

Data Type    Duration

Leveling Delay (task field)

Entry Type    Calculated or entered

How Calculated    When Microsoft Office Project performs resource leveling that requires tasks to be shifted, a delay value is entered in the Leveling Delay field to reflect this shift.

Best Uses    Add the Leveling Delay field to a task view if you want to examine the delays to tasks caused by resource leveling.

Example    Two resources in your schedule were overloaded, so you applied resource leveling to the project. To analyze the effects of the leveling, add the Leveling Delay field to the Task Sheet view.

Remarks    You can use the Leveling Gantt view to see delay shown by Gantt bars.

In previous versions of Project, the task Leveling Delay field was the task Delay field. If you are updating a schedule created in a previous version, any information in the task Delay field will now be contained in the task Leveling Delay field.

Leveling Delay (resource field)

Entry Type    Null

Best Uses    Add the resource Leveling Delay field to the Resource Usage view when you want to view or filter for leveling delay for the resources' individual assignments.

Example    Two resources in your schedule were overloaded, so you applied resource leveling to the project. To analyze the effects of the leveling, you add the Leveling Delay field to the sheet portion of the Resource Usage view. No information appears in the Leveling Delay field next to the resources' names. However, the values for their assignments appear in the Leveling Delay assignment rows below each resource name.

Leveling Delay (assignment field)

Entry Type    Calculated or entered

Assignment leveling delay is expressed in regular duration units while task leveling delay is expressed in elapsed duration units.

How Calculated    When Microsoft Office Project performs resource leveling that requires tasks or assignments to be shifted, a delay value is entered in the Leveling Delay field to reflect this shift.

Best Uses    Add the Leveling Delay field to the Task Usage or Resource Usage view when you want to examine assignment delays caused by resource leveling.

Example    Two resources in your schedule were overloaded, so you applied resource leveling to the project. To analyze the effects of the leveling, add the Leveling Delay field to the sheet portion of the Task Usage view.
