Issue: The specified XML file does not refer to a schema

You are opening an XML file that doesn't refer to an XML schema. Microsoft Office Excel 2007 must create a schema based on the contents of the XML file order to work with the XML data that is contained in the file. For more information, see Add, map, and unmap XML elements.

If the schema that is created by Office Excel 2007 is incorrect or insufficient for your needs, you should create an XML schema file and then edit the XML data file so that the XML data file refers to the schema. Follow these steps to remove the schema that Excel created from your workbook:

  1. If the Developer tab is not available, do the following to display it:

    1. Click the Microsoft Office Button Office button image , and then click Excel Options.

    2. In the Popular category, under Top options for working with Excel, select the Show Developer tab in the Ribbon check box, and then click OK.

Note: The Ribbon is a component of the Microsoft Office Fluent user interface.

  2. On the Developer tab, in the XML group, click Source.

  3. In the XML Source task pane, click XML Maps.

The XML Maps dialog box is displayed.

  4. Click the XML map that represents the schema that was created by Excel, and then click Delete.
