Install Visio

Visio is sold as a stand-alone application.

To try a free trial or purchase Visio 2016 or Visio Pro for Office 365, go here: https://products.office.com/Visio.   

The following information is about installing Visio Standard, Visio Professional, and Visio Pro for Office 365.

Download and install Visio 2013 or 2016 (1 user and 1 PC)

  1. If you did a software download purchase, you must click Continue to Office.com to get your software. The Continue to Office.com button can be found in your confirmation email. After you click Continue to Office.com, you’ll be directed to a custom Microsoft Office site to register or sign-in with a Microsoft account.

    If you received a product key card in the mail, enter the product key located on the backside of the card at https://setup.office.com/ and follow the instructions on the card.

    Note: If you also have Office installed, you can use the same Microsoft account email and password to install Visio.

  2. Select your preferred country and language.

  3. From your My Office Account page, select the item that you want to install.

    If you already redeemed your product key and you need to sign in to My Office Account to install or reinstall Visio, go to www.office.com/myaccount. Sign in with your Microsoft account. This is the email address and password you associated with your copy of Visio.

  4. Click Install to begin your download.

  5. Depending on your browser, go to the install pop up that appears and click Run (in Internet Explorer), Setup (in Chrome), or Save File (in Firefox).

    The install begins.

  6. Start using Visio right away by opening it. In most cases, Visio is activated once you start it and after you agree to the License terms by clicking Accept.

  1. Open the Visio application.

  2. On the File menu, select Account.

  3. For Visio Click-to-Run installations, you'll have an Update Options button. Select Update Now.

    MSI-based installations don't have an Update Options button. These installs only show an About Visio button. Run Windows update. Select your operating system below to view the steps for running Windows update.

If you chose to install the 2016 version of Visio, but decide you want to go back to Visio Pro 2013, see Reinstall Office 2013 after an Office 2016 upgrade.

Download and install Visio Pro for Office 365

  1. If you have subscribed to Visio Pro for Office 365, start by going here: https://portal.office.com/OLS/MySoftware.aspx?SoftwareManageLayout=Panel_Visio_ClientDownload.

    To try a free trial or purchase Visio Pro for Office 365, go here: https://products.office.com/en-us/Visio.   

    Note: Don't see Visio Pro for Office 365?    Have your admin assign you a license. If you are the admin, see Assign a license first and follow the steps in Manage user software in Office 365 to allow users to install Visio.

  2. Choose your language, and then click Install.

  3. Click Run.

  4. Click Yes to allow the installation to run.

    You may need to close some programs before continuing with installation.

Installation happens in the background.    You'll know that Visio Pro for Office 365 is being installed when you see a notification like this:

When installation is done, you'll see another notification, and you can start digging in!

Ways to upgrade or update

What you need to do

Your Office 365 admin or IT department installs Visio Pro for Office 365 for you

There's nothing for you to do. Your admin or IT department will likely continue to manage your installations and updates.

Upgrading form an earlier version of Visio, such as Visio Professional 2010 or Visio Professional 2007

If you don't see an option to install Visio when you sign into portal.office.com/ols/mySoftware.aspx, contact your admin. Your admin may not have assigned a licensed to you or given you permission to install the version of Office you want. If you're the admin, see Manage user software in Office 365.

  1. Uninstall Visio following the steps in Uninstall Office 2013, Office 2016, or Office 365 from a PC.

  2. Install Visio following the steps in Install Visio Pro for Office 365.

Upgrading from Visio Professional 2013

If you don't see an option to install Visio when you sign into portal.office.com/ols/mySoftware.aspx, contact your admin. Your admin may not have assigned a licensed to you or given you permission to install the version of Office you want. If you're the admin, see Manage user software in Office 365.

The steps to upgrade from Visio depends if the installation is click-to-run or MSI-based. You'll also follow these steps if you want to check for updates.

Check if Visio 2013 was installed using Click-to-Run or MSI
  1. Open Visio application.

  2. On the File menu, select Account.

  3. For Visio click-to-run installations, you'll have an Update Options button.

    MSI-based installations don't have an Update Options button. These installs only show an About <Visio> button.

    Click-to-run installations have an Update Options button on the Account page. MSI-based installations don't have this button.
If your install of Visio 2013 was a click-to-run install
  1. Install Visio Pro following the steps in Install Visio Pro for Office 365

If your install of Visio 2013 was an MSI install
  1. Uninstall Visio following the steps in Uninstall Office 2013, Office 2016, or Office 365 from a PC.

  2. Install Visio following the steps in Install Visio Pro for Office 365.

If you chose to install the 2016 version of Visio Pro for Office 365, but decide you want to go back to Visio Pro 2013, see the section Reinstall Visio Pro 2013 in How do I reinstall Office 2013 after an Office 2016 upgrade using Office 365 for business?
