Install Skype for Business on your PC

Downloading and installing Skype for Business on your computer takes 10-15 minutes. First, make sure your Office 365 for business plan includes Skype for Business. Not all Office 365 plans include it.

Are you looking for the non-business version of Skype? Download it from here.

Are you using a Mac? Skype for Business for Mac will be available in 2016. Until then, Lync for Mac 2011 is included with Office 365 and available for you to download and install.

Choose the download and installation instructions for the plan you have.

Skype for Business for Office 365 customers

Important   If you have a subscription to the Office 365 Business plan or Office 365 Business Premium plan and upgrade or reinstall Office 2013 to Office 2016, you might experience the following issues:

  • The Skype for Business client is removed from your computer.

  • You receive an error message about newer versions of Office already installed.

See this workaround.

To download Skype for Business, you need to sign in to the Office 365 portal. These instructions explain how to get to the Skype for Business download, and install it.

  1. Sign in to Office 365 at https://portal.office.com/.

  2. At the top of your Office 365 page, choose Settings: update your profile, install software and connect it to the cloud > Office 365 settings.

    Choose Office 365 settings

  3. Choose Install and manage software.

    Choose Install and manage software

  4. Depending on your Office 365 plan:

    • If Skype for Business is bundled with other Office 365 applications, you'll see this:

This is what you'll see if your version of Skype for Business is bundled with other Office applications.

Choose Install to install the Office 365 suite of applications, including Skype for Business. When you're done, go to Sign in for the first time at the end of these steps.

    • If Skype for Business is separate from other Office applications, you'll see this:

At the first page of the Skype Setup wizard, choose your language.

    • If you don't see Skype for Business listed at all, then it's not included in your Office 365 business plan.

  5. For separate installations, to download Skype for Business, choose Skype for Business, select language, and choose Install. At the bottom of your screen, choose Save as to download the setupskypeforbusinessentryretail.exe file to your computer.

Choose Save as to save the app to your computer.

Important   Note where you saved the setupskypeforbusinessentryretail.exe file on your computer. If Skype for Business stops during setup, this is where you go to re-run it.

  6. After the setupskypeforbusinessentryretail.exe file has downloaded, choose Run.

Choose Run to start the setup wizard.

The Office installer starts, and displays a message that it's installing Office. However, it's only installing Skype for Business. It is not installing all of Office.

The Office installer looks like it's installing Office but it's only installing Skype for Business.

  7. When the Office installer is finished, it displays a message that Office was installed on your computer. However, only Skype for Business was installed. Choose Close.

  8. Launch Skype for Business. At the First things first box, if you accept the licensing agreement, choose Accept.

Congratulations! You're done installing Skype for Business. Now you're ready to sign in to Skype for Business for the first time.

Skype for Business Online Plan customers

The Skype for Business Online Plan is sold separately from Office 365. When you purchased Skype for Business, you created an Office 365 user ID at the same time, even though you didn't purchase Office 365.

When you purchased Skype for Business Online, you created an Office 365 account.

To install Skype for Business, you need to sign in to Office 365 first. Here's how you do that:

  1. Locate your Office 365 user ID. You received an email from the Microsoft Online Services Team that contains your Office 365 user ID. It looks something like this:
