Insert and format the current date and time

Note: The TODAY and NOW functions change only when the sheet is recalculated. Functions are not updated continuously. The date and time values are updated from the computer's system clock.

Change the date or time format

  1. Select the cell.

  2. On the Home tab, under Number, click the Number Format box   Format Number box  , and then click Custom.

  3. Under Category, select Date or Time, and then select a format in the Type list.

    Note: Excel cannot display both a time and a date format in the same cell. When you select one format, the other information will no longer be displayed in the cell.
