How to uninstall Skype for Business

You can remove Skype for Business from your computer in just a few steps.

Step 1: Stop Skype for Business from starting automatically

  1. In Skype for Business, choose the tools icon and Tools > Options.

    In Skype for Business, choose the Tool icon, then Tools >  Options

  2. Choose Personal, then uncheck Automatically start the app when I log on to Windows and Start the app in the foreground. Then choose OK.

    Choose Personal, then unselect the options to start automatically.

  3. Choose File > Exit.

    To exit Skype for Business, choose the gear icon, then File > Exit

Skype for Business is still on your computer, but you'll no longer see it. Some people stop here because they're happy with just not having Skype for Business start.

Step 2: Remove Skype for Business from your computer

  1. Go to Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features > Uninstall or change a program.

  2. Choose Skype for Business > Uninstall.

    In the Control Panel, choose Uninstall Programs, then choose Skype for Business

  3. At the Ready to uninstall? box, choose Uninstall.

    At the Ready? box, choose Uninstall.

    The Office dialog box says "We're removing Office from your computer now" but it's only removing Skype for Business, not other Office applications you may have installed on your computer. If you have other Office applications open, such as Excel or Outlook, you'll be prompted to close them.

    Skype for Business is integrated with other Office applications so the Office installer needs to update them to remove Skype for Business features. This can take several minutes.

  4. When it's done uninstalling, choose Close.

    At the last dialog box, choose Close.

  5. Restart your computer.

Remove Skype for Business from your registry

Why can't I uninstall Skype for Business from my computer?

If your business purchased the Office 365 ProPlus plan, then you can't uninstall Skype for Business without uninstalling all of Office. Some businesses choose this option because they want everyone to install and use all of the Office apps.

Here's what you need to do: Contact the person who purchased Office 365 for your business and tell them you want to uninstall Skype for Business. They can switch to a different Office 365 plan, and you'll be able to remove Skype for Business from your computer but keep the other Office apps.
