Highlight your text

In PowerPoint 2016, Office 365 subscribers can now take advantage of a text highlighter to emphasize important pieces of text. If you don't have an Office 365 subscription, you can use the Glow text effect.

Highlight text in PowerPoint 2016

Note: This feature is only available if you have an Office 365 subscription. If you are an Office 365 subscriber, make sure you have the latest version of Office.

To highlight text
  1. Select the text you want to highlight.

  2. On the Home tab, select the arrow next to Text Highlight Color Shows the Highlight With Text Icon in PowerPoint. .

  3. Pick the color you want. The text you selected will be highlighted in the color you selected.

To highlight multiple pieces of non-contiguous text
  1. With no text selected on the slide, on the Home tab, select the arrow next to Text Highlight Color Shows the Highlight With Text Icon in PowerPoint. .

  2. Pick the color you want, and then move the mouse pointer over the text area of your slide.

    The mouse pointer changes to a highlighter Hightlighter Pointer Icon .

  3. Select the text you want to emphasize to highlight it. To stop highlighting, press the ESC key on your keyboard, or select the arrow next to Text Highlight Color Shows the Highlight With Text Icon in PowerPoint. and choose Stop Highlighting.

To remove highlighting from text
  1. Select the highlighted text.

  2. On the Home tab, select the arrow next to Text Highlight Color Shows the Highlight With Text Icon in PowerPoint. and choose No Color.

Workaround for highlighting text in PowerPoint 2013 (or PowerPoint 2016, if you aren't an Office 365 subscriber)

If you don't have the text highlighter feature, the workaround is to make text in PowerPoint appear to be highlighted by using the Glow text effect.

Use the Glow Text Effect to highlight text

  1. Select the text on the slide.

  2. Under Drawing Tools, click the Format tab.

  3. Click Text Effects > Glow, and then choose a Glow Variation.

You can keep applying Glow formatting to text you want to highlight throughout your presentation.
