Get suggestions of related data from Azure Marketplace

Power Pivot can make it easier to find data on Microsoft Azure Marketplace DataMarket that’s related to the data in your workbooks. Power Pivot automatically assigns categories to the columns in your model. If you share those categories (not your data, just the categories of data), then DataMarket can recommend datasets that are related to your data.

Settings and services used for getting recommendations are off by default. As a first step, turn on the settings, and then use Power Pivot to connect to the DataMarket.

  1. Start with a workbook that contains a Data Model. See Create a Data Model in Excel if you’re not sure.

  2. Enable the Power Pivot add-in so that Power Pivot appears in the ribbon. See Start Power Pivot in Microsoft Excel 2013 add-in for steps on how to do this.

  3. Click Home > Get External Data > From Data Service > Suggest Related Data. If categorization is not enabled, you’ll be asked to enable it. When you do, the Table Import Wizard connects to the DataMarket and shows a list of recommended datasets that best match the categories used in your Data Model.

  4. Select a dataset.

  5. Sign in using your Microsoft account to purchase the dataset. If you aren’t sure whether you want the data, note the dataset name, cancel the connection, and go directly to Microsoft Azure to explore the dataset before you buy. Many datasets offer a trial version, tutorials, sample lookups and other options for evaluating the data.

Data categorization and suggestions from DataMarket

When you add tables to Power Pivot, Power Pivot can automatically categorize each column. For example, Power Pivot would categorize a column of city names as City, and a list of company names as Company. You can modify the automatic categorizations, categorize your own data, or turn the feature off altogether.

Categorizing your data has two main benefits. With your columns categorized:

  • Power View can suggest visualizations that are appropriate for your data. For example, if your data includes country names, Power View can suggest a map.

  • Microsoft Azure Marketplace can suggest data from the DataMarket that may be related to your data. For example, it might suggest census or weather data. The suggested data could be from a free data provider such as the United Nations, or from a company that charges for data. You choose whether to accept the suggestions.

Turn off data categorization

  1. In Excel, click Power Pivot > Settings.

  2. In Power Pivot Options & Diagnostics, click Categorization.

  3. Clear the options and click OK.
