Format text as superscript or subscript

This article describes how to make text superscript or subscript in PowerPoint 2010.

  1. Select the text that you want to format as superscript or subscript.

  2. On the Home tab, in the Font group, click the Dialog Box Launcher Icon image.

  3. In the Font dialog box, under Effects, select the Superscript or Subscript check box.

Note   For superscript text, if you want to raise the selected text without changing the font size, enter a higher percentage in the Offset box. For subscript text, if you want to lower the selected text without changing the font size, enter a lower percentage in the Offset box.

PowerPoint 2010 automatically applies superscript formatting to the ends of ordinal numbers, which are numbers that show the relative position of something in a sequence, such as 21st, 22nd, 23rd, 24th, etc.

To change this setting, do the following:

  1. Click the File tab, and then under Help, click Options.

  2. In the PowerPoint Options dialog box, click Proofing, and then click AutoCorrect Options.

  3. In the AutoCorrect dialog box, on the AutoFormat As You Type tab, do one of the following:

    • Clear the Ordinals (1st) with superscript check box to prevent PowerPoint from applying superscript formatting to ordinal numbers.

    • Select the Ordinals (1st) with superscript check box if you want PowerPoint to apply superscript formatting to ordinal numbers.
