Find your way in Skype for Business (Lync)
After you install Skype for Business (Lync) from the Windows Store, it’s added as a tile on your Windows Start screen. Select the tile to sign in to Skype for Business (Lync). When you sign in for the first time, you’ll see an option to set Skype for Business (Lync) as a lock screen app. If you do, Skype for Business (Lync) will run in the background and display notifications of IMs and calls even when your screen is locked. Also, Skype for Business (Lync) will display short status updates on the Skype for Business (Lync) tile in the Windows Start screen.
The Skype for Business (Lync) home screen
When you click the Skype for Business (Lync) tile on the Windows Start screen, you see the Skype for Business (Lync) home screen. Next to app name on the top is the search button that you use to search for people by name, phone number or skill.
The group of tiles on the left of the home screen is called the hub. The top tile displays information about your meetings, and a link to join a current meeting on your calendar.
The Contacts, History, Voice mail, and Meeting tiles give you access to the individual screens from where you can view and manage your Contacts list, view and resume past conversations, listen to voice mail, and join upcoming meetings respectively.
Next to the hub is a tile for each of your contacts from Favorites. Select a tile to see the different modes you can use to connect with the contact, such as IM, audio call, or video call. Each of the other default groups, as well as custom groups that you’ve created, is displayed on a separate tile, and only pictures are displayed for the contacts in those groups.
The app commands
The app commands are options for tasks that are specific to the screen you’re on. For some screens, such as Contacts list, conversation history, or voice mail, you can access the app commands by swiping in from the top or bottom, or right-click the screen if you’re using a mouse.
You’ll see black bars displayed both on the top and the bottom of the screen. The bar on the top displays the HOME button and a separate tile for each of your ongoing conversations and calls. Select the HOME button to go back directly to the Skype for Business (Lync) home screen.
The bar on the bottom displays the app commands that you can use for tasks specific to the screen. For example, the app commands in the Contact screen have options to add contacts or use the Dial pad.
The app commands in calls or meetings automatically show at the bottom of the window. You’ll see options such as adding audio, video, transferring the call or adding more participants.
Go back to a previous screen
If the current screen has an arrow pointing to the left, select it to go back one screen. If not, swipe in from the top or bottom, or right-click the screen if using a mouse, to access the app commands, and select the HOME button to go back to the Skype for Business (Lync) home screen.
The Skype for Business (Lync) window usually occupies the entire PC screen. To work on other apps while keeping an eye on your Skype for Business (Lync) activities, such as conversations and meetings, shrink the Skype for Business (Lync) window and snap it to one side of the screen. Then use the remaining screen space to open and work on another app.
To snap the Skype for Business (Lync) window, swipe in from the top of the screen and curve either to the right or the left. A smaller size of the Skype for Business (Lync) window will snap to the side you choose. If you’re using a mouse, move the pointer to the top of the screen where it will change to a hand. Click and drag the mouse down to shrink the Skype for Business (Lync) window, and then drag the resized window either to the right or the left of the screen.
