FAQ: Office on Windows 10 S

What is Office in the Microsoft Store?

It's the Office you know and trust, delivered in a new way from the Microsoft Store.

Why will Office be made available in the Microsoft Store?

Making Office available in the Microsoft Store allows people with Surface Laptop running Windows 10 S to get the Office applications that they know and trust. The install and update process for Office in the Microsoft Store is currently in preview. When the preview period is over, you'll also be able to buy and install Office in the Microsoft Store on other Windows 10 devices.

Do I have to pay for Office in the Microsoft Store while it's in Preview?

We're including 1 year of Office 365 Personal on Surface Laptop running Windows 10 S that ship during the preview period. While Office itself is not in preview, Office is using new install and update processes that are in preview. As a result, Office in the Microsoft Store may occasionally behave in unexpected ways.

Which apps are part of Office in the Microsoft Store?

The following apps will be part of Office in the Microsoft Store available on June 15, 2017 to customers with Surface Laptop running Windows 10 S:

  • Word

  • Excel

  • PowerPoint

  • OneNote for Windows 10

  • Outlook (not available in preview for Office 365 Education plans)

  • Access (not available in preview for Office 365 Education plans)

  • Publisher (not available in preview for Office 365 Education plans)

Which editions of Office will run on Windows 10 S?

Several Office editions provide access to Office in the Microsoft Store during the preview period, allowing you to run Office on Windows 10 S. These plans include:

  • Office 365 Personal

  • Office 365 Home

  • Office 365 for Education Plus

  • Office 365 Education E5

When the preview period is over, other Office editions also will work on Windows 10 S, including Office Home & Student 2016 and Office Home & Business 2016.

Is Office in the Microsoft Store any different than an existing Office desktop suite?

Office in the Microsoft Store does have a few differences:

  • Issues and limitations experienced in Office via other install methods apply to Office in the Microsoft Store as well. For example, the Outlook 2016 limitation regarding Exchange 2007 still exists.

  • You will only be able to install the 32-bit version of Office.

  • Includes OneNote for Windows 10 instead of OneNote 2016.

  • Some Office add-ins may not work if Office is installed via the Microsoft Store. We're working to make Office in the Microsoft Store compatible with more add-ins.

  • Office in the Microsoft Store will only allow one user per device so multiple users may not be able to use Office on the same device.

  • Office apps no longer have the Update Now button under File > Account. Updates for Office in the Microsoft Store are automatic and pushed through store updates. If you want to manually update Office, you can open the Store app, click your profile picture and select Download and updates > Get Updates.

  • Most Microsoft Office 2016 Tools are not available with Office in the Microsoft Store while some can be accessed directly in the Office app:

    • Database Compare 2016 is not available.

    • Spreadsheet Compare 2016 is not available.

    • Telemetry Dashboard for Office 2016 is not available.

    • Telemetry Log for Office 2016 is not available.

    • Office 2016 Upload Center is not needed.

    • Office 2016 Language Preferences is available within Office apps. Go to File > Options > Language while in one of the apps.

    • Skype for Business Recording Manager is available in Skype. Go to Options > Tools > Recording Manager in Skype.

What happens when the preview period is over?

After the preview period is over, your Office will be automatically updated to the release build by the Microsoft Store.

What about the Office mobile apps in the Microsoft Store?

The Office Mobile apps (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) are recommended for mobile devices like smartphones and tablets with screen sizes 10.1" or less, but they can be used on Windows 10 S devices.

Note: Office Mobile apps require an Office 365 subscription for editing on devices with screen sizes greater than 10.1".

What does my school need to run Office on Windows 10 S?

To run Office on a Windows 10 S device, your school needs both an Office 365 tenant and a Microsoft Store for Education tenant. The Microsoft Store for Education gives your IT Admin access to a preview bundle of the Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote applications called "Office 365 for Windows 10 S (Education Preview)". Your IT Admin may then install this suite using one of the following methods:

  1. Install via the Set Up School PCs app (Recommended)

This app is available in the Microsoft Store for Education and allows the IT Admin to create a deployment package for the Office bundle and other apps. The deployment package may be downloaded and copied onto a USB key for repeated deployment across devices, minimizing network bandwidth usage. This approach is recommended for bulk deployment scenarios. IT administrators can download the app from the Microsoft Store at Set Up Schools PCs.

For more information setting up and using this app, see Use the Set up School PCs app.

  2. Install via Intune

IT Admins may also choose to push the Office bundle to each device via Intune for Education. This means that Office must be downloaded and installed via the network each time, using up more network bandwidth. This approach is recommended for one-off deployment scenarios.

For more information about using Intune for Education, see How do I add apps to Intune for Education?

After your IT Admin has installed Office on your Windows 10 S device, anyone at your school who wants to use Office on that device can do so if they have been assigned an Office 365 "seat" that includes Office client rights. Office client rights are included in any of the following Office 365 subscriptions:

In many cases, all students at a school will have access to Office client rights via the Student Use Benefit Program. After Office is installed, students and faculty assigned an Office 365 seat with client rights can simply sign in with their Org ID and use those Office applications on Windows 10 S.

Why is only Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote included for Education customers? How about Outlook, Access and Publisher?

Our most popular apps Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote are included during the preview period to optimize for schools planning to set up Windows 10 S devices for "education cart" scenarios, where multiple students sign in to a single device. Additional applications and deployment options will be available after the preview.

I'm a business customer and would like to run Office on a Windows 10 S device. What are my options?

Businesses are advised to first upgrade their Windows 10 S devices to Windows 10 Pro, then install a business edition of Office. Office in the Microsoft Store does not currently support Office 365 business plans or volume licenses.
