Export contacts from other email services and programs

You can export contacts from another email service or program such as Gmail, Yahoo!, or Outlook.com (formerly Hotmail), and then use them with your Office 365 or other Exchange-based email. The first step is to export the contacts from the other email service or program to a CSV (comma-separated value) file. A CSV file is a common file format used to store contact information.

After you export your contacts into a CSV file, you can import those contacts into your account by using Outlook Web App (the web browser version of Outlook), or by using a desktop version of Outlook (for example Outlook 2013, Outlook 2010, or Outlook 2011 for Mac). For more information, see Next steps.

If you use a desktop version of Outlook, you can export information that is stored in Outlook by using an Outlook data file (.pst). The advantage of exporting and importing by using an Outlook data file rather than a CSV file is that an Outlook data file lets you export and import email, contacts, calendar items, and more.
