Error code 30174-4, 30125-4, or 30038-4 when installing Office

You might see error code 30174-4, 30125-4, or 30038-4 if your antivirus software, firewall, or proxy settings prevent you from installing Office.

Not subscribed to Office 365? If you're trying to install a one-time purchase of Office, we have another solution that might work for you.

If you're using Office 365, try these suggestions, and then choose Install on your account page to restart the installation:

Plug in

Plug in! Use a wired connection to the Internet, if possible. If this doesn't work, try connecting at a different location, like a friend's house or a wireless hotspot.

Install from home

Install from home. If you're trying to install at work or at school, the network may be limited in a way that won't allow Office to install. Your IT department may be able to help you handle these limitations. If not, you could also try taking your computer home to install Office. Once it's installed, you'll be able to use it at work or school as if you had installed it there.

Change some settings

Change some settings:

  • Temporarily turn off proxy settings. If you use your computer both at home and at work, try turning off your proxy settings before you install. Open Control Panel and choose Network and Internet > Internet Options. On the Connections tab, choose LAN settings, and clear the Use a proxy server for your LAN check box.

    Proxy server

Note   There may be additional proxy settings that you need to bypass. If this doesn't work, check with your IT department for more information.

  • Temporarily turn off antivirus software. If you need information on how to turn off your antivirus software, check the manufacturer's website. Uninstalling your antivirus software may also help. (Don't forget to reinstall it after Office is finished installing!)

Tip   Not sure which antivirus software you have? Open Control Panel and choose System and Security > Action Center > Security to find the name of the antivirus software installed on your computer.

  • Temporarily turn off firewall. Turn off Windows Firewall on Windows 8 or Windows 7. If you're using a firewall from another manufacturer, visit their website for information on how to temporarily disable the firewall.
