Step-by-step installation instructions
How you install or reinstall Office 365, Office 2016, or Office 2013 depends on whether your Office product is part of an Office for home or Office for business plan. If you're not sure what you have, see what Office products are included in each home or business plan and then follow the step-by-step instructions from the drop-down below.
- Select installation instructions for a PC or Mac
- Office for home - Install on a PC
- Office for home - Install on a Mac
- Office for business - Install on a PC
- Office for business - Install on a Mac
If this is a new copy of Office and you haven't redeemed your product key (if one came with your copy) or associated it with a Microsoft account, go to office.com/setup and follow the prompts to sign in and enter your product key.
Step 1: Sign in to My Office Account to begin installing Office-
Go to My Office Account at www.office.com/myaccount. If you're not already signed in with the Microsoft account associated with your copy of Office do that now. If you're signed in with a different account, sign out of that and then sign in again with the correct Microsoft account.
Tip: If your sign in was unsuccessful try signing in again with the correct account, or see "This is the right place to install and re-install Office" for a list of options, including what to try if you can't remember your Microsoft account.
-
If you have an Office 365 you'll need to select Install > first.
Select Install. By default, this installs the 32-bit version of Office on your PC using the language you selected when you redeemed the product. If you'd like to install the 64-bit version or a different language Office expand that section below and follow those steps.
Note: When installing Office 2016 you might see a message that says, “Stop, you should wait to install Office 2016”. This means Office detected a compatibility issue with something else installed on your computer. Select the Learn why link in the error message, or see the Troubleshooting section below.
Install the 64-bit version of Office or a different language:
Install the 64-bit version of Office
Note: If you're not sure about the differences between 32 and 64-bit, see Choose the 32-bit or 64-bit version of Office.
-
Select the Language and install options link.
-
On the Language and install options page, select the link, Additional install options.
-
In the Other versions of Office section, select Office - 64-bit from the drop-down list, then select Install. Follow the remaining steps in the section below, Install and activate Office.
Install a different language
You can change the language of Office by choosing a different language then the one you selected when you redeemed Office.
Note: This option is only available if you have a subscription to Office 365 Home, Personal, or University, or a one-time purchase of Office 2016. It doesn't apply to one-time purchases of Office 2013 such as Office Home and Student 2013.
-
Under Install Information, select the Language and install options link.
-
In the drop-down list box next to Language, choose the language you want to install.
-
When you've made your selection, select Install. Follow the remaining steps in the section below, Install and activate Office.
For more information about changing languages if you've already installed Office, see Choose or permanently change the language of your Office installation. If you'd like to install language packs for additional display, help, or proofing tools, see Language Accessory Pack for Office 2016.
Step 2: Install and activate Office
After selecting Install in the steps above, Office performs a series of pre-checks. Once that's complete, begin the installation by going to to the install pop up that appears on your computer:
-
Depending on your browser click Run (in Internet Explorer), Setup (in Chrome), or Save File (in Firefox).
Note: If you're using Edge as your browser, first click Save, and then click Run.
If you see the User Account Control prompt that says, Do you want to allow this app to make changes to your device? Click Yes.
The install begins.
-
Your install is finished when you see the phrase, "You're all set! Office is installed now" and an animation plays to show you where to find Office applications on your computer. Follow the instructions in the window, for example Click Start > All Apps to see where your apps are, and select Close.
-
Start using an Office application right away by opening any app such as Word or Excel. In most cases, Office is activated once you start an application and after you agree to the License terms by clicking Accept.
-
Office might activate automatically. If you see the Microsoft Office Activation Wizard, follow the prompts to activate Office. If you need help, see Activate Office 365, Office 2016, or Office 2013.
