Install or reinstall Office from My Office Account

If this is a new copy of Office and you haven't redeemed your product key (if one came with your copy) and associated it with a Microsoft account, see the section below Associate Office with a Microsoft account.

Begin installing Office
  1. Sign in to My Office Account at www.office.com/myaccount with your Microsoft account. This is the email address and password you associated with your copy of Office.

Sign in to Office with a Microsoft account email address and password

Tip: If your sign in was unsuccessful try signing in again with the correct account, or see "This is the right place to install and re-install Office" for a list of options, including what to try if you can't remember your Microsoft account.

  2. Select Install and depending on your product, select Install again. By default, this installs the 32-bit version of Office on your PC using the language you selected when you redeemed the product. If you want to install the 64-bit version, change your language, or install Office 2013 instead, see the section Custom install options.

    Select Install

Note: When installing Office 2016 you might see a message that says, “Stop, you should wait to install Office 2016”. This means Office detected a compatibility issue with something else installed on your computer. Select the Learn why link in the error message, or see the Additional information section below.

  3. Depending on your browser, go to the install pop up that appears and click Run (in Internet Explorer), Setup (in Chrome), or Save File (in Firefox).

Browser options: in Internet Explorer click Run, in Chrome click Setup, in Firefox click Save File

    The install begins.

Window showing progression of Office install
  4. Your install is finished when you see the phrase, "You're all set! Office is installed now" and an animation plays to show you where to find Office applications on your computer. Follow the instructions in the window, for example Click Start > All Apps to see where your apps are, and select Close.

Office is installed now. Select Close
  5. Start using an Office application right away by opening any app such as Word or Excel. In most cases, Office is activated once you start an application and after you agree to the License terms by clicking Accept.

Accept the License Agreement terms by clicking Accept
  6. Office might activate automatically. If you see the Microsoft Office Activation Wizard, follow the prompts to activate Office. If you need help, see Activate Office 365, Office 2016, or Office 2013.

Custom install options

The following are additional install options depending on your Office product.

For Office 365 and Office 2016 only: Choose or change the language of your Office installation.

For Office 365 Home subscribers only: You can install Office on up to 5 PCs or Macs. Share your other four installs with friends or family, or use the same Microsoft account to install Office on your other computers. The steps to install are the same.

For a one-time purchase of Office 2016 or Office 2013 such as Office Home & Student, Office Home & Business, or Office Professional: You can install Office on only one computer. Certain conditions apply if you need to transfer the license. For more information, see the Microsoft License Terms for your product.

Associate Office with a Microsoft account

Before you can install your copy of Office the first time, you needed to redeem your product key (if your copy of Office came with one) and associate it with a Microsoft account. How you complete this step depends on how you got your copy of Office. Select from below:

Physical copies of Office come with a product key that you need to redeem first. Once that's done, you'll associate your copy of Office with a Microsoft account. This is the account you'll use anytime you want to install or reinstall Office, or to choose custom install options. If you already did this and simply want to install or reinstall Office, go to Install or reinstall Office from My Office Account.

Step 1: Find your product key and redeem it
  1. Locate the 25-character product key which uses a combination of 25 letters and numbers on the back of your product card or on your receipt. It looks like this:

    XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX

Product key location when buy Office from retailer but not on DVD
  2. Go to http://www.office.com/setup and enter your key.

    Enter a product key.
Step 2: Sign in with a Microsoft account
  1. On the Office sign in page, enter the Microsoft account email address and password that you’d like to associate with this copy of Office, and select Sign in.

If you don’t have an existing Microsoft account, select Sign up now and follow the prompts to create an account; or follow the steps at Create an account.

Additionally, if you use any of the Office mobile apps on your iOS, Android, or Windows mobile device and you sign in to the app with this Microsoft account, you have access to the app's extra features which is exclusive to Office 365 subscribers. Go directly to Install or reinstall Office from My Office Account.
