Does your presentation need a break?

Sometimes you need to give your audience a break for a quiz, lab, small group discussion, or just to take five. Wouldn't it be nice to include a break timer in your presentation so people can check how much time they have left as they work on their quiz questions or grab a cup of coffee before the presentation continues?

To download the Blue-Gray or Gray timers, click the Microsoft Office Button Office button image , and then click New. In the Search field, type Timers, select the one you want to use, and click OK.

How do the timers work?

These break timers rely on two PowerPoint features to work—custom animation and timing. To make the timers, we created one image for each time interval, ordered the images, and then applied custom animation and timing settings to each image. If you are interested, you can learn to do this yourself.

When you open a break timer template, you’ll notice that the timer is set at 00:00. However, when you start the slide show, the timer will start at the correct time. The 15, 10, and 5-minute timers count down by 1-minute intervals until they reach 1 minute. At that point, they will count down in 30-seconds intervals to zero. The 1-minute timer counts down by 10-second intervals to zero. When the timer is finished, it automatically transitions to the next slide.

How do I insert a timer into my presentation?

  1. After you download a break timer template, save it as a presentation on your computer.

  2. Open the presentation that will contain the timer.

  3. On the Slides tab, place your insertion point after the slide that will precede the timer. (Make sure you don't select a slide. Your insertion point should be between the slides.)

  4. On the Insert menu, click Slides from Files.

  5. In the Slide Finder dialog box, click the Find Presentation tab.

  6. Click Browse, locate and select the timer presentation, and then click Open.

  7. In the Slides from Files dialog box, select the timer slide.

  8. Select the Keep source formatting check box. If you do not select this check box, the copied slide will inherit the design of the slide that precedes it in the presentation.

  9. Click Insert.

  10. Click Close.
