Differences between classic and new experiences for lists and document libraries

The new document library and the new list experiences in SharePoint Online are simpler, more streamlined, and easier to use. However, there are some differences between the new experiences and classic view.

This article lists the features that are available in classic view, but not yet in the new experience.

As an admin, you have the option to have SharePoint automatically detect when certain features are being used, and then automatically return to classic mode. See how to use auto-detect to automatically return to classic view in the section below.

Features available only in classic mode

The Ribbon

  • The Ribbon itself

  • Certain features available through the Ribbon:

    • Popularity trends

    • RSS Feed

    • Most Popular Items

    • Connect to Outlook

    • Connect to Office

    • Export to Excel

      Note: Export to Excel is available only in classic mode for document libraries (and only in Internet Explorer). However, it is available in the new experience for lists (in Internet Explorer and Edge only).

    • Open with Access

    • Form Web Parts

    • Edit Library

    • New Quick Step

    • Declare Record

    • Send To

    • Follow

View features

  • Item totals

  • Custom styles (such as Basic Table or Document Details)

  • Manage views for users with Contribute or lower-level permissions

Navigation features

  • Tree view

  • Metadata navigation and filtering

  • Managed navigation

  • Per-location views

  • Customized navigation links on publishing sites

Column types

  • External data columns

  • Geolocation columns

  • Publishing columns (Publishing HTML, Publishing Image, Publishing Hyperlink)

Library features

  • Content organizer

  • Follow feature

  • View in File Explorer (opens library in classic view, but switches back to the new experience the next time you browse to the library).

Customizations

  • Customize in InfoPath

  • Minimal Download Strategy (MDS)

  • SharePoint Server Publishing

  • JSLink code on fields or views

  • CustomActions that include ScriptBlock or ScriptSrc properties

    CustomActions that do not include ScriptBlock or ScriptSrc properties will continue to work as expected

Permissions

  • Limited-access user permission lockdown mode

Use auto-detect to automatically return to classic view

As an admin, you can choose to show classic view only, or use the new experience but automatically return to classic view when certain features are used. These features are:

Navigation features

  • Metadata navigation and filtering – All libraries on sites that have this feature enabled are shown in classic view.

Column types

  • External data columns

  • Geolocation columns

  • Publishing columns (Publishing HTML, Publishing Image, Publishing Hyperlink)

Permissions

  • Limited-access user permission lockdown mode

Customizations

  • JSLink code on fields

  • CustomActions that include ScriptBlock or ScriptSrc properties

To turn on auto-detect
  1. Choose Admin centers and then SharePoint.

    Admin, SharePoint

  2. Choose Settings.

  3. Scroll down to SharePoint Lists and Libraries experience.

  4. Choose New experience (auto-detect).
