Delete or restore files and folders in OneDrive

You can delete specific files on OneDrive, or you can delete entire folders and all the files in them.

Your browser does not support video. Install Microsoft Silverlight, Adobe Flash Player, or Internet Explorer 9.

Delete files and folders

From the OneDrive website
  1. Go to the OneDrive website.

    You might need to sign in with your Microsoft account.

  2. Pick the items you want to delete by selecting the check box in the upper-right corner of items.

  3. On the bar at the top of the page, tap or click Delete The Delete button on OneDrive.com. .

In Windows 10, Windows 8.1, or using the OneDrive desktop app
  1. On your taskbar, select File Explorer The File Explorer icon. .

  2. Select your OneDrive folder, select the items you want to delete, and press the Delete key on your keyboard.

Remove items from your shared list
  1. Go to the OneDrive website.

  2. Pick the items you want to remove by selecting the check box in the upper-right corner of items.

  3. On the bar at the top of the page, tap or click Remove from shared list.

Restore deleted items

From the OneDrive website
  1. Go to the OneDrive website.

  2. On the left pane, tap or click Recycle bin.

  3. To restore all items, tap or click Restore all items. To permanently delete all items, tap or click Empty recycle bin. To restore or permanently delete individual items, pick them by selecting their check boxes.

    Note: Items in the recycle bin are automatically deleted 30 days after they're put there. If your recycle bin is full, the oldest items will be automatically deleted after three days.

In Windows 10, Windows 8.1, or using the OneDrive desktop app
  • When you delete files on OneDrive using File Explorer, they're moved to your computer's desktop Recycle Bin. Unless your Recycle Bin is overflowing, the files stay there until you empty the Recycle Bin.

    To open the Recycle Bin, double-tap or double-click the Recycle Bin on the desktop. Then, right-click (or press and hold) the item you want to restore, and select Restore.
