Delete cells, columns, or rows in a table, or delete a table

Delete cells, columns, or rows in a Word table by using the right-click menus. Also, delete a table, clear contents in a table.

  1. Right-click in a table cell, row, or column you want to delete.

  2. On the Mini toolbar, click Delete.

  3. Choose Delete Cells, Delete Columns, or Delete Rows.

Tip:  You can delete the contents of a table row or column without deleting the table structure. To do this, select the row or column and then press the Delete key.

  1. Right-click in a table cell, row, or column you want to delete.

  2. On the menu, click Delete Cells.

  3. To delete one cell, choose Shift cells left or Shift cells up.

    To delete the row, click Delete entire row.

    To delete the column, click Delete entire column.

Tip:  You can delete the contents of a table row or column without deleting the table structure. To do this, select the row or column and then press the Delete key.

To delete a table and its contents

  1. Click in the table.

  2. Under the Table Tools, click the Layout tab.

  3. In the Rows & Columns group, click Delete, and then click Delete Table.

    Tip: In Word, try selecting the whole table, and then pressing the Backspace key to completely get rid of the contents and the table structure.

To clear the contents of a table

  1. On the Format Text (Outlook) or Home (Word) tab, in the Paragraph group, click Show/Hide.

  2. Select the items you want to clear.

A cell

Click the left edge of the cell. Select a cell

A row

Click to the left of the row. Select a row

A column

Click the column's top gridline or border. Select a column

Contiguous cells, rows, columns

Drag the pointer across the cell, row, or column that you want.

Noncontiguous cells, rows, or columns

Click the first cell, row, or column that you want, hold down CTRL, and then click the next cell, row, or column that you want.

Text in the next cell

Press the TAB key.

Text in the previous cell

Press SHIFT+TAB.

The entire table

In Print Layout view, rest the pointer over the table until the move handle Four-headed arrow handle appears, and then click the table move handle.

3. As a final step, press the Delete key.
