Customize the navigation on your team site

You can customize the navigation on your team site by adding, removing, or editing the links. To customize the navigation, click EDIT LINKS The edit links button .

Edit links

1. Click EDIT LINKS to customize the Top link bar.

2. Click EDIT LINKS to customize navigation in the Quick Launch.

Note:  If you don’t see the option to edit links, you probably don’t have permission to customize the navigation. To customize the navigation, you need to be a site owner or have permission to customize the site.

You can also customize the location of the navigation by using a different site layout, as explained later in this article.

Tip: If you have a small business with a few employees, one of the best ways to set up file sharing and online collaboration is to use OneDrive for Business and an Office 365 team site together. See Customize your Office 365 team site for file storage and sharing to learn how to customize the navigation on your team site so you and your team members can move back and forth quickly between your team site and OneDrive for Business folders.

The navigation links are a table of contents that shows what information is available on your site. When navigation links are done correctly on every page, they make it easy to browse the site, discover information, and return to previously viewed pages. As you build your site, you want to make sure site navigation is clear and simple for your users.

The links that appear on the left or top of your site are generally referred to as the site's navigation panel. When you create a new list or library, a new link appears automatically under Recent on Quick Launch. Only the five newest links appear in the Recent section.

The Recent link on the Quick Launch displays the recently created pages, lists, and libraries

You can rename these links, rearrange them, add new ones, add sublinks, and so on. You can also create links that go to other websites if you like.

Note:  When you create a new page, it does not automatically appear in the Quick Launch panel. You have to manually create a link to the page.

You can also customize the navigation links on the Top link bar of your site to change capitalization, rearrange the order, or include links to the subsites that users visit most often.

Top navigation of a site

You can add a new link to the navigation panel by dragging an app from the Site Contents page directly to the Quick Launch or Top link bar, or by clicking link and then entering the URL.

The easiest way to add a link is to drag an app from the Site Contents page to the Quick Launch or Top link bar.

  1. Go to the Site Contents page: click Settings Office 365 Settings button and then click Site contents.

  2. Click EDIT LINKS The edit links button on the Quick Launch or Top link bar, depending on where you want to add a link.

Note: Sites can be customized and may not contain EDIT LINKS on the Quick Launch or Top link bar. If you don't see the EDIT LINKS, contact your administrator.

  3. Click the app you want to add and drag it to where you want it on the Quick Launch or Top link bar.
Drag app from Site Contents to navigation
(Refresh the page (F5) to see the animation again.)

  4. Click Save.

If you want to add a link to another site, you can still add it by entering the URL manually.

  1. Click EDIT LINKS The edit links button on the Quick Launch or Top link bar depending on where you want to add a link.

  2. Click + link.

  3. Enter a display name for the link and a target location, making sure you precede it with http://.

  4. Click OK to add the new link to the Quick Launch or Top link bar.

  5. Click Save.

Renaming a link doesn't affect the corresponding page that the link references.

  1. Click EDIT LINKS The edit links button on the Quick Launch or Top link bar, depending on where you want to edit a link.

  2. Click directly on the link you want to rename and start typing the new name.

  3. Click outside the name, and then click Save.

You can change the order of the navigation links by dragging and dropping them to a new position.

  1. Click EDIT LINKS The edit links button on the Quick Launch or Top link bar depending on the location of the link that you want to move.

  2. Select the link that you want to move and drag it to its new position in the navigation area.

  3. Repeat these steps for each link you want to move.

  4. When finished, click Save.

You can always remove a link from the Quick Launch or Top link bar, which is something you might want to do if the page is needed on the site but not in the Quick Launch or Top link bar. Removing a link to the page only removes the link and does not delete the page.

  1. Click EDIT LINKS The edit links button on the Quick Launch or Top link bar depending on the location of the link that you want to remove.

  2. Click the X corresponding to the link to remove it from the navigation panel.

  3. Click Save.

To change the location of the navigation area on your site, you choose a different site layout. The site layout is part of the site design and positions the Quick Launch or Top link bar on the top or the left side of each page on the site.

  1. Click Settings Office 365 Settings button and then click Change the Look.

  2. On the Change the Look page, select the Current design (the one you’re already using).

  3. Under Site layout, choose the layout that positions the navigation on the top or the left side of the page, which you see in the preview area.

Note: There are two site layouts for each look, Seattle and Oslo. When you choose a look for your page, you'll see an option Site Layout on the left while you're viewing the new page. Choosing the Oslo site layout moves the Quick Launch navigation to the top of the site and removes the top link bar. You can restore both navigation controls by changing the site layout back to Seattle.

  4. Under Fonts and Colors, change the font style and color for the new page.

  5. If you want to apply the layout, click Try it out and on the next page choose Yes, keep it. To go back for more choices, click Start Over.

This takes you to your site with the new layout applied. To learn more about this feature, see Customize your team site.

If the above options are not enough and you want to try more advanced sorting, grouping, or inheritance options for navigation on your site and subsites, go to the Look and Feel settings under site settings. Make sure you are at the appropriate site level to figure the navigation options.

Note:  These additional navigation settings are available only if the publishing features are enabled for your site collection.

  1. Click Settings Office 365 Settings button and then click Site settings.

  2. On the Site Settings page, click Look and Feel.

  3. Choose the options to show subsites or to display the navigation of the parent site, such as Quick launch or Top link bar . It usually takes some experimentation to get the options right.
