Customize the My Site host

The My Site host controls the appearance and behavior of the pages on all personal sites in your organization. As the tenant admin, you can create a template for My Site host sites and pages in order to achieve a particular look and feel. This template is what is what your users will follow when they create their personal sites.

How to find the My Site host

The URL of the My Site host looks something like this: Contoso-my.sharepoint.com

The –my indicates that you are on the My Site host.

To access the My Site host:

  1. Sign in to Office 365 with your work or school account.

  2. Choose OneDrive for Business from the app launcher.

  3. Select Site contents from the settings gear.

Add a shared app

A shared app is one that will be shared across all pages in your organization. Examples include a discussion board or announcements. The first step is to add the app to your app gallery and then to add it to the Newsfeed page on the My Site host.

To add a shared app to your app gallery:

  1. From a page on the My Site host, click Settings Settings button> Manage shared apps.

  2. Click Add an app and then select the desired app from the list. If you don't see any apps, download an app from the SharePoint store before trying this step (see Buy an app from the SharePoint Store or Add an app to a site for more information).

Add an app button on the shared apps page

  3. Type a name for the app in the box provided, and then, optionally, click Advanced Options to add a description.

  4. Click Create. The app is now included in your app part gallery.

To add an app to a page on the My Site host:

  1. From a personal page on the My Site host, click Settings Settings button> Edit page.

  2. Find the web part zone where you want to install the app and click Add a Web Part.

  3. In the Categories box, select Apps.

  4. In the Parts box, select the app that you just added to your gallery.

  5. Click Add.

To delete the app from a page on the My Site host:

  1. From a personal page on the My Site host, click Settings Settings button> Edit page.

  2. Mouse-over the right side of the web part zone that contains the app you want to delete, click the down arrow, and click Delete. You can only delete the apps that you previously added.

  3. Click OK to confirm.

Tip    You can add an app to your personal My Site without propagating it to other site users in your organization by choosing Settings > Add an app. Notice that when you choose this option, /personal appears in the URL. For example: contoso-my.sharepoint.com/personal.
