To turn lines of text into a numbered list, select the list and, on the Home tab, in the Paragraph group, click Numbering. Each line or paragraph becomes a numbered item.

The Numbering option is highlighted on the Home tab.

Starting with a blank page?

  1. Place your cursor where you want a numbered list.

  2. On the Home tab, in the Paragraph group, click the arrow next to Numbering.

  3. Choose a number style and start typing.

The Numbering gallery is shown on the Home tab.

  4. Press Enter every time you want a new item, or press Enter twice to end the numbered list.

Tips:

  • When you start a paragraph with an asterisk or a number 1., Word assumes you're beginning a bulleted or numbered list and displays the AutoCorrect Options button. If you don't want your text turned into a list, click the button and then click Stop Automatically Creating Numbered Lists.

  • The Numbering options are shown in AutoCorrect.
