Create a dimension member

In PerformancePoint Planning Business Modeler, a dimension is an organized hierarchy of categories, or members, that describe data in a fact table. A dimension member is a single position or item in a dimension.

Note: You can create dimension members in any user-defined dimension. You can also create dimension members in several of the dimensions that Planning Business Modeler automatically defines when you create a model site. However, some predefined dimensions accept input only from the system (that is, from PerformancePoint Server or from Planning Business Modeler). To learn more about the predefined dimensions, see Predefined dimensions.

When you create a new dimension member, you must decide how the new member is related to the existing members in the dimension. For example, a dimension member can be a sibling member (at the same hierarchical level as other members) or a child member (at one level lower than its parent member).

What do you want to do?

Create a new dimension member

Set a default dimension member

Create a new dimension member

  1. In the Workspace Browser pane, click Dimensions.

  2. In the Dimensions workspace, select the dimension to which the new member will belong.

  3. In the Dimensions Tasks pane, click Check Out to open the dimension for modification.

  4. Click the Member Maintenance or the Member Sets Maintenance tab to open the workspace.

  5. To display a list of members, select a member set from the Member set drop-down list on the workspace toolbar.

  6. In the list of members, select the member that will be related to the new member. Then, take one of the following steps:

    • If the new member will be a sibling of the selected member, click the Create New Sibling icon on the workspace toolbar, or, from the Action menu, select New Sibling.

    • If the new member will be a child of the selected member, click the Create New Child icon on the workspace toolbar, or, from the Action menu, select New Child.

Planning Business Modeler inserts a new member row. Notice that placeholder values appear in each cell that represents a member property column.

  7. Before you can save your changes and use the new member, you must set the member properties for it. To set the member properties, take the following steps:

    • Type in values for the system-defined properties Name, Label, and Description. For information about character and word restrictions for names and labels, see About names and labels.

    • Type in values for dimension-specific properties, if any.

  8. (Optional) Use the Move Up or Move Down buttons, and the Indent or Outdent buttons to position the new member in the list.
