Create a PowerApp for a list in SharePoint Online

PowerApps is an enterprise service for innovators everywhere. PowerApps lets you connect, create and share business apps with your team in minutes and using any device. You can create a PowerApp for an existing list in SharePoint Online. This article will show you how.

Note: Some functionality is introduced gradually to organizations that have opted in to the First Release program. If you're not enrolled in the First Release program, or your administrator has set your view to Classic SharePoint, you may not yet see this feature or it may look different than what is described in the help articles.

Create a PowerApp for a list in SharePoint Online

You can create a PowerApp for an existing SharePoint list.

  1. The first step is to navigate to the list where you want to create a PowerApp.

  2. One way to do that is to first navigate to your SharePoint site and then view all of the contents of the site. Once you are on your SharePoint site click the Settings Settings icon icon in the upper right corner of your web browser and then click Site Contents.

You will then see all of the contents of your SharePoint site, including all of the lists. Click on the list you want to use to provide data for your PowerApp to navigate to it.

  3. At the top of the list click the PowerApps drop-down and then click Create an app.

Clicking PowerApps and then clicking Create an app.
  4. Provide a name for your new app in the right-hand pane and then click Create. Your browser will refresh with the PowerApp authoring website.

  5. Your app will automatically have a few app screens already set up for you. The browse screen will show you all of the items in your list. You will also have an add screen to add more items to the list and an edit screen to edit items in the list. The PowerApps authoring environment is extremely powerful.

Tip:  If you have not already signed in to Microsoft Office 365 and SharePoint Online then you will be asked to do so.

  6. Continue to develop the PowerApp as desired. If you want to preview your PowerApp you can click the play button. When you push the play button you will see a preview of your app and you can add new items and view existing items by default without developing your app further. To learn more about developing your PowerApp, see Add and Configure PowerApps.

  7. When you are done developing your PowerApp, click File and then click Save.

Activating PowerApps in a SharePoint list

The next generation of SharePoint lists are being rolled out over time. The Office 365 tenant administrator can set the default behavior for new lists. If the default behavior is set to the classic experience then you will not see the PowerApps menu at the top of your screen. If the new experience is available you can enable it for your list in the Advanced Settings for the list app. To learn more, see Switch the default for document libraries from new or classic.
