Create DNS records at United Domains for Office 365

Caution   The United Domains website doesn’t support SRV records, which means several Skype for Business Online and Outlook Web App features won’t work. No matter which Office 365 plan you use, if you manage your DNS records at United Domains, there are significant service limitations, and you might want to switch to a different DNS hosting provider.

If you choose to manage your own Office 365 DNS records at United Domains despite the service limitations, follow the steps in this article to set up your DNS records for email, Skype for Business Online, and so on.

These are the main records to add. (Need more help? Get support.)

After you add these records at United Domains, your domain will be set up to work with Office 365 services.

If you have a SharePoint Online Public Website, you can set it up to use your custom domain for the website URL address, like www.your_domain.com.

Note    Typically it takes about 15 minutes for DNS changes to take effect. However, it can occasionally take longer for a change you've made to update across the Internet's DNS system. Add a TXT record for verification

Before you use your domain with Office 365, we have to make sure that you own it. Your ability to log in to your account at your domain registrar and create the DNS record proves to Office 365 that you own the domain.

Note    This record is used only to verify that you own your domain; it doesn’t affect anything else. You can delete it later, if you like.

  1. To get started, go to your domains page at United Domains by using this link. You'll be prompted to login.

  2. On the Order Review page, choose Members Area.

  3. Under My Domain List, in the Manage column, choose DNS for the domain that you want to edit.

  4. In the DNS Records section, in the boxes for the new record, type or copy and paste the values from the following table.

    (Select the Record value from the drop-down list.)

    Note   This is an example. Use your specific Destination or Points to Address value here, from the table in Office 365.

  5. Choose the Save control that is indicated in the following illustration.

  6. Wait a few minutes before you continue, so that the record you just created can update across the Internet.

Now that you've added the record at your domain registrar's site, you'll go back to Office 365 and request Office 365 to look for the record.

When Office 365 finds the correct TXT record, your domain is verified.

  1. Go to the Manage domains page.

  2. On the manage domains page, locate the domain that you are verifying and then, in the Action column for that domain, choose Start setup.

  3. On the Add this TXT record to show you own domain_name page, choose Okay, I've added the record.

Add an MX record so email for your domain will come to Office 365

  1. To get started, go to your domains page at United Domains by using this link. You'll be prompted to login.

  2. On the Order Review page, choose Members Area.

  3. Under My Domain List, in the Manage column, choose DNS for the domain that you want to edit.

  4. In DNS Records section, in the boxes for the new record, type or copy and paste the values from the following table.

    (Select the Record value from the drop-down list.)

    MX Record

    10 <domain-key>.mail.protection.outlook.com

    The 10 is the MX priority value. Add it to the beginning of the MX value, separated from the remainder of the value by a space.

    Note   Get your <domain-key> from your Office 365 portal account.

  5. Choose the Save control that is indicated in the following illustration.

  6. If there are any other MX records, remove each of them by choosing delete for that record.

Add the four CNAME records that are required for Office 365

  1. To get started, go to your domains page at United Domains by using this link. You'll be prompted to login.

  2. On the Order Review page, choose Members Area.

  3. Under My Domain List, in the Manage column, choose DNS for the domain that you want to edit.

  4. Add the first of the four required CNAME records:

    In the DNS Records section, in the boxes for the first new record, type or copy and paste the values from the first row of the following table.

    (Select the Record value from the drop-down list.)

  5. Choose + Add new record.

  6. Add the second CNAME record:

    Type or copy and paste the values from the second row of the table above into the boxes for the second record, and then choose + Add new record.

    Add the third and fourth records in the same way, using the values from the third and fourth rows of the table.

  7. Important   If you have Mobile Device Manager (MDM), then you must create two additional CNAME records. Follow the procedure that you used for the other four CNAME records, but supply the values from the following table.

    (If you do not have MDM, you can skip this step.)

  8. When you've added the final new record, choose the Save control that is indicated in the following illustration.

Caution   Currently United Domains doesn’t support SRV records.
