Convert your SmartArt graphic into shapes

Sometimes it’s necessary to break apart your SmartArt graphic if you want to do additional editing of shapes, such as resizing or positioning of individual shapes. You may also want to apply advanced animations to individual shapes in PowerPoint.

Important:  After you split your SmartArt graphic into individual shapes, you can’t convert the shapes back to a SmartArt graphic.

  1. Click the SmartArt graphic that you want to break apart.

  2. Under SmartArt Tools, on the Design tab, in the Reset group, click Convert to Shapes.

    Convert to Shapes button

If you do not see the SmartArt Tools or Design tabs, make sure that you have selected a SmartArt graphic. You might have to double-click the shape to open the Design tab.
