Clear tabs

To remove a tab stop that you’ve added to your document, just drag the tab stop symbol off the ruler.

When you release the mouse button, the tab stop disappears and your text moves to the default tab location – every half inch.

For example, the picture below shows text aligned to tab stops that have been added to the document. A right aligned tab stop at .75 inches and a left-aligned tab stop at 1.25 inches.

Note:  If you don’t see the ruler at the top of your document, click View > Ruler. If you don’t see the tab stop character in your document, click Home and then click the Show/Hide button Button image to see them..

To remove the default tab spacing, remove the tab stop characters in your document. You can delete them manually by selecting and deleting them. If you want to remove several or all of them, it’s faster to use find and replace

  1. Open the Find and Replace dialog box by clicking on Home > Replace.

  2. Type ^t in the Find what box and leave the Replace with box empty.

  3. Click Replace All or click Find Next in combination with the Replace button to view and delete tabs one at a time.

Clear all or multiple tab positions

A quick way to clear multiple tab stops, is to use the Paragraph Dialog Box Launcher.

  1. Select the text where you want to remove the tab stops.

  2. Under Page Layout, click the Paragraph Dialog Box Launcher.

  3. In the Paragraph dialog box, click Tabs.

  4. In the list under Tab stop position, click the tab stop position that you want to clear, and then click Clear.

  5. Repeat step 4 for each tab stop position that you want to clear or click Clear All.

  6. Click OK.
