Change your password in Office 365 for business

When you first sign in to Office 365 for business, use the temporary password given to you, and then create a new password to use for sign-in from then on. You can also change your password at any time after you have signed in.

Change my password

  1. Sign in to Office 365 with your work or school account.

  2. Go to Settings  Settings: update your profile, install software and connect it to the cloud > Office 365 settings > Password.

  3. Type your old password, and then type a new password and confirm it.

  4. Click Save.

Some users can’t change their password in Office 365 because their organization creates and maintains their accounts. If you don’t see a link to change your password on the Password page, you can’t change your work or school account password in Office 365. Your organization might have sent you instructions to help you change your password. Follow those instructions to change your password, or ask your admin for help.

For more information, see Change the password for your work or school account.

Note    When you change your password for yourwork or school account , be sure to update the password on your phone and desktop email program to match the new password for your account.

I forgot my password, or it no longer works

If you’ve forgotten your password or it’s no longer working, use the Microsoft Online Password Reset site to send a new password request to your workplace technical support—typically the person who set up your work or school account for you.

If you want to contact your workplace technical support team directly, send them a link to the admin help topic Reset a user's password.

Office 365 admins: Things you should know about resetting your password

If you are an Office 365 admin for your organization, you can reset a user's password for users who forgot their passwords.

If you are the only Office 365 admin in your organization, you can reset your own password if you have previously provided an alternate email address and a mobile phone number that can receive a text message.

Notes    You need a mobile phone that can receive text messages for password reset only if one or both of the following applies to you:

  • Your organization has a custom domain that you’ve set up to use with Office 365.

  • Yourwork or school account is synchronized through directory synchronization.

For information about resetting your own password, see Reset passwords for admins. For information about how to set up your administrator account with an alternate email address and mobile phone number, see:

Password requirements

When you create a new password, your password must have 8-16 characters and combine at least 3 of the following:

  • Uppercase letters

  • Lowercase letters

  • Symbols

  • Numbers

If you forget your password, request a password reset from an Office 365 admin. Your admin can provide you with a new temporary password to use the next time you sign in.
