Change storage space for your subscription

If you start to run out of storage for your SharePoint Online site collections, you can add storage to your Office 365 subscription if your plan is eligible.

In this article:

View available storage space

You can find out if you are approaching your storage limits in one of two ways:

  • Go to Admin > SharePoint and then on the site collections menu, view the amount of storage used.

  • Sign up for an email alert when you set your storage quota. Select Admin > SharePoint > Site collections. Choose a URL and then select Server Resource Quota. Select the Send email when each selected site collection resource usage reaches warning level check box.

Then you can add or remove storage space for your subscription.

Add storage space to your subscription

  1. Sign in to Office 365 with your work or school account as a global admin. Learn how to sign in.

  2. Select the app launcher icon Office 365 app launcher icon in the upper-left and choose Admin.

  3. Select Billing > Subscriptions.

  4. On the Subscriptions page, select the subscription that you want to add storage space to. Select the down-arrow next to Add-ons to view any add-ons that have been purchased.

  5. If the Office 365 Extra File Storage add-on has already been purchased, it will appear under Add-ons, which means that extra storage space has previously been purchased.

  6. Do one of the following:

Purchase the Office 365 Extra File Storage Add-on

Complete this procedure to buy the Office 365 Extra File Storage Add-on with the number of gigabytes of extra storage that you need.

  1. On the Subscriptions page, select the subscription that you want to buy an add-on for.

  2. On the bottom-left corner of the subscription details, choose Add-ons > Buy add-ons.

  3. On the Purchase services, page, mouse over or tap Office 365 Extra File Storage, and then select Buy now.

  4. Enter the number of user licenses that you need and, if shown, select a base subscription. Select Check out now.

  5. Enter the number of gigabytes that you want to buy.

  6. Review the pricing information, and then select Next > Place order > Continue.

Add additional gigabytes of storage to a previously purchased Add-on

Complete this procedure to add extra file storage to an Office 365 Extra File Storage add-on that was previously purchased.

  1. On the Subscriptions page, make sure that Add-ons is still expanded and then under Office 365 Extra File Storage, select Change quantity.

  2. In the fly-out, enter the total number of gigabytes that you need and then select Submit. For example, if you currently have 100 gigabytes of extra file storage and you need an additional 100 gigabytes, you would enter 200 in the box.

Remove storage space from your subscription

If you have purchased extra file storage via the Office 365 Extra File Storage add-on, then you can use these steps to reduce the extra storage space to as low as 1 gigabyte. To remove all of the extra storage space, you need to call Office 365 support.

To remove extra file storage via the Office 365 Extra File Storage add-on
  1. On the Subscriptions page, make sure that Add-ons is still expanded and then under Office 365 Extra File Storage, select Change quantity.

  2. In the fly-out, enter the total number of gigabytes that you need and then select Submit. For example, if you currently have 200 gigabytes of extra file storage but you only need 100 gigabytes, then you would enter 100 in the box.

Is my plan eligible for SharePoint Online storage?

SharePoint Online storage is available for the following subscriptions:

  • Office 365 Enterprise E1

  • Office 365 Enterprise E2

  • Office 365 Enterprise E3

  • Office 365 Enterprise E4

  • Office Online with SharePoint Plan 1

  • Office Online with SharePoint Plan 2

  • SharePoint Online (Plan 1)

  • SharePoint Online (Plan 2)

SharePoint Online Storage for Small Business is available for the following subscriptions:

  • Office 365 Business Essentials

  • Office 365 Business Premium

  • Office 365 Small Business Premium

  • Office 365 Small Business
