Change my password in Outlook.com

It's always a good idea to change your password on a regular basis, making sure to add a level of complexity.

Improvements are coming to Outlook.com; in fact, some customers are already enjoying the new Outlook.com experience. How you change your password depends on whether you've been upgraded to the new experience. For instructions, select the link below that matches your mailbox.

  1. In Outlook.com, in the upper right corner, select Settings icon > Options > Account details (password, addresses, time zone).

    Note: If you are prompted, login to your Account page. This prompt may occur in a different browser window than the one where Outlook is loaded.

  2. Select the Account tab.

  3. Select Change password.

    Note: As a security measure, you might be prompted to prove your identity. If so, provide your current password and move to step 3.

  4. Enter your current password, enter your new password, reenter your new password, and then click Save.

  1. In Outlook.com, in the upper right corner, right-click your profile picture, and then click Account settings.

    Note: If you are prompted, login to your Account page. This prompt may occur in a different browser window than the one where Outlook is loaded.

  2. Under Basics, click Change password.

    Note: As a security measure, you might be prompted to prove your identity. If so, decide how you want to receive the security code — by phone or email — and then click Send code. When you receive the code, enter that and move to step 3.

  3. Enter your current password, enter your new password, reenter your new password, and then click Save.
