Change, delete, or hide headers and footers on slides, notes, and handouts

To change or delete the text of headers and footers on PowerPoint slides, notes, and handouts, follow the steps in this article. If you want to add an image to the header of your presentation, see the Add a background picture (or watermark) to slides article for instructions.

Select a heading below to open it and see the detailed instructions.

  1. Select the slide with the footer you want to change.

    To select more than one slide, click the first slide that you want to change, and then press and hold Ctrl while you click the other slides.

  2. Click Insert > Header & Footer.

  3. In the Header & Footer dialog box, on the Slide tab, select the Footer check box, and then change the text in the Footer text box.

    Tips: 

    • You can also pick other options to change here, such as slide numbers or the date and time.

    • To hide the footer from showing on the title slide, select the Don't show on title slide check box. Click Apply to All to ensure that the title slide incorporates this change.

  4. Select either Apply (only this slide) or Apply to All (all slides).

These changes don’t affect the headers or footers on notes and handouts. To change those headers and footers, see the next section, "Change header and footer information on notes and handouts."

  1. Click View > Normal.

  2. Click Insert > Header & Footer Header & Footer button .

  3. In the Header and Footer dialog box, click the Notes and Handouts tab, and make the changes that you want.

    Date and time

    Add a date and time that is updated each time that the presentation is opened

    Click Update Automatically, and then select the date or time format that you want.

    Add a fixed date and time

    Click Fixed, and then type the date and time that you want.

    Page number, header, and footer

    To include page numbers, headers, or footers on your notes and handouts, select the check boxes and enter the text you want. The Preview picture on the right shows an outline where each item will appear on the page.

  4. When you're done making changes, select Apply to All.

  5. On the View tab, select either Notes Page or Handout Master to see the effect of your changes on notes or handouts.

These changes don’t affect the headers or footers on the slides themselves—just the notes and handouts. To change the footers on the slides, see the previous section of this article, "Change footer information on slides."

  1. Select the slide with the footer you want to delete.

    To select more than one slide, click the first slide that you want to change, and then press and hold Ctrl while you click the other slides.

  2. Click Insert tab > Header & Footer.

  3. In the Header & Footer dialog box, on the Slide tab, do one of the following:

    • To hide specific content in the footer, clear the check boxes next to the options (Date and time, Slide number, and Footer) that you don't want to appear on your slides.

    • To delete the footer, clear the text from the Footer text box.

  4. Select either Apply (to apply the change only to the current slide) or Apply to All (to apply the change to all slides).

  1. Select any slide.

  2. Select Insert > Header & Footer Header & Footer button .

  3. In the Header and Footer dialog box, click the Notes and Handouts tab, clear the boxes for the options you want to remove from the header or footer.

  4. Select Apply to All.

  5. On the View tab of the ribbon, select either Notes Page or Handout Master to see the effect of your changes on notes or handouts.

Again, these changes don’t affect the headers or footers on the slides themselves—just the notes and handouts. If you want to remove the footers on the slides themselves, see the previous section in this article, "Hide or delete footer information from slides."

  3. In the Header and Footer dialog box, on the Slide tab, make the change that you want, and then do one of the following:

    • To apply the changes to slide or slides that you selected in step 1, click Apply.

    • To apply the changes to the information on all of the slides in your presentation, click Apply to All.

  1. Select any slide.

  2. Click Insert > Header & Footer.

  3. In the Header and Footer dialog box, on the Notes and Handouts tab, make the changes that you want, and then select Apply to All.

    Date and Time

    Tip: To remove headers and footers from the title slide, select the Don't show on title slide check box. Click Apply to All to ensure that the title slide incorporates this change.

  4. Do one of the following:

    • To apply the changes to slide or slides that you selected in step 1, click Apply.

    • To apply the changes to all of the slides in your presentation, click Apply to All.

  2. Click Insert > Header & Footer.

  3. In the Header and Footer dialog box, select the Notes and Handouts tab.

  4. Clear the check boxes for the options that you want to remove from the header or footer

  5. Select Apply to All.

  6. On the View tab, in the Presentation Views group, select either Notes Page or Handout Master to see the effect of your changes on notes or handouts.
