Can I install Office 365 on a Windows RT device?

Windows RT devices, such as Surface RT, come with Office Home and Student 2013, which you can use with Office 365. Office Home and Student 2013 includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote. Since you can only install apps from the Windows Store on your Windows RT device, you cannot install the version of Office that comes with Office 365. You can, however, still get to your email and access team sites by using the Office 365 portal. You can also use the Windows RT apps for email, contacts, your calendar, and messaging.

Sign in to the Office 365 portal

From your browser, go to the Office 365 portal, and then sign in by using your Office 365 user ID and password.

Access your email, calendar, and contacts

You can begin using email, calendar, and contacts right away with Outlook on the Web, or you can set up your Windows RT apps to work with Office 365.

Use Outlook on the Web

After you’ve signed in to the Office 365 portal, use Outlook on the web to access your email, calendar, and contacts. For information about how to use Outlook on the Web in Office 365, see Start using Outlook the Web for email and calendars.

Use the Mail, People, Calendar, and Messaging apps

You can also set up the Mail, People, Calendar, and Messaging apps in Windows RT to work with Office 365. Sign in with your email address and password and Windows RT will save your account information to use with the apps.

Note:  Before setting up these apps on your Windows RT device, contact your Office 365 admin to make sure you’re allowed to do this.

  1. On Start, tap or click Mail.

  2. Swipe in from the right edge of the screen, and then tap Settings.

If you're using a mouse, point to the upper-right corner of the screen, move the mouse pointer down, and then click Settings.

  1. Tap or click Accounts.

  2. Tap or click Add an account, select Outlook for the type of account you want to add, and then follow the instructions.
