Business Contact Manager cannot connect to the shared database

Symptoms

When you are attempting to connect to a shared Business Contact Manager database for the first time, or if you are attempting to reconnect, you may receive one of the following messages:

Cannot access the database server on computer <computername>. For more information, click Help.

-Or-

Connectivity to your shared database has been lost. You are now working offline.

Cause

There are a number of possible causes listed in the table below.

Resolution

Try one or more of the following to help resolve this issue.

If you are connecting to a shared database for the first time

If

Try this

The remote computer is not turned on, or a network cable is disconnected.

Turn on the remote computer and ensure its network cables are connected.

Business Contact Manager for Outlook is not installed or activated on the remote computer.

Install and activate Business Contact Manager for Outlook on the remote computer. See Install Business Contact Manager for Outlook 2010.

The Business Contact Manager database on the remote computer has not been shared.

Ask the database owner to share the Business Contact Manager database. For more information, see Share your Business Contact Manager data with other users.

You have not been granted permission to access the shared Business Contact Manager database.

Ask the administrator to grant you permission to access the Business Contact Manager database. If the administrator needs more information, see Instructions for a computer administrator to add a user in Business Contact Manager.

The firewall settings on the remote computer are blocking your access to the Business Contact Manager database.

Ask the administrator to adjust the firewall settings on the remote computer. For more information, see How do I change my Windows settings so I can share my Business Contact Manager database with users on other computers?

If you have previously connected to a shared database and are reconnecting

If

Try this

You were previously connected to the remote database, but the network connection has been interrupted or lost.

If you have a local copy of the database, continue to work in your local copy. This offline database will synchronize with the shared database when the network connection is restored.

The remote computer is not turned on.

Turn on the remote computer.
