Add records at to set up your SharePoint Online Public Website

Note: The SharePoint Online Public Website information in this article applies only if your organization purchased Office 365 prior to March 9, 2015. If you purchased Office 365 after March 9, 2015, use an Office 365 website hosting partner.

Before you rename the site to use your custom domain name, make sure you've finished designing the website (in Office 365) and that you're ready for everyone to see it. Then when you're ready to use your custom domain for the address, you create (at the DNS host for your domain) a CNAME record to point to your customized website.

Add the CNAME record to use your custom domain

First, review one of the two following linked articles (depending on the Office 365 subscription you have) for an overview of the process.

Then, when you’re ready to create the required CNAME record, use the steps in the following table.



What you’ll see

Add a CNAME record.

  1. On the Service page for the domain, in the Name Server Records section, choose Modify.

    (You may have to scroll down.)

    To find the Service page for the domain, see Find your DNS records at

  2. On the Edit Domain Name Server page, choose Modify Advanced Records.

    (You may have to scroll down.)

  3. In the new record, make sure that the fields are set to precisely the following values:

    • Host Name: Use the name of your custom domain; for example,

    • Record Type: Alias (CNAME)

    • Data: Use where name is the name of your custom domain, for example

  4. Choose Continue, and then choose Finish.



Note:  Typically it takes about 15 minutes for DNS changes to take effect. However, it can occasionally take longer for a change you've made to update across the Internet's DNS system. Find your DNS records at the website

If you need help finding the place where you work with DNS records at, follow the steps below.



What you’ll see

Go to the page that has the DNS records for your domain.

  1. In your browser, go to your domains at and sign in.

  2. On the Dashboard page, choose the Services tab.

  3. For the domain that you want to update, choose Manage.

    The Service page for the domain opens.
