Add or remove titles in a chart

Add or remove titles in a chart

To make a chart easier to understand, you can add titles, such as a chart title and axis titles, to any type of chart. Axis titles are typically available for all axes that can be displayed in a chart, including depth (series) axes in 3-D charts. Some chart types (such as radar charts) have axes, but they cannot display axis titles. You can’t add axis titles to charts that don’t have axes (like pie or doughnut charts).

Scatter chart with axis titles

This scatter chart displays a title that is centered above the chart, and an axis title for both the horizontal and vertical axis.

You can also link chart and axis titles to corresponding text in worksheet cells by creating a reference to those cells. Linked titles are automatically updated in the chart when you change the corresponding text on the worksheet. If you no longer want to display the titles, you can remove them from the chart.

Add a chart title

When you create a chart, a Chart Title box appears above the chart. You can simply select this box and type the title you want, format it the way you want, and move it to a different place in the chart.

  1. Click the Chart Title box, and then type the title.

To start a new line in the title, press Alt+Enter.

  2. To change the placement of the title, click the Chart Elements button Chart Elements button next to the upper-right corner of the chart.

  3. Click the arrow next to Chart Title, and then click Centered Overlay or click More Options for other options.
