Activate Office 365, Office 2016, or Office 2013
In many cases, Office 365 and Office 2016 activate automatically. If you're not prompted to activate, you can start using Office right away. If Office needs to be activated, you'll see one of the screens below.
If you see Try, Buy, and Activate buttons
Office is installed as an Office 365 Home trial
You can activate Office as a 1-month trial of Office 365 Home. You can also buy Office, add Office to an existing Office 365 subscription, or enter a product key from a product key card. If you have an older copy of Office, you can install that instead.
If you see "Office is included on this PC"
Office is installed as a one-year subscription or one-time purchase
A digital Office product key is transmitted to your PC, so you won't need or receive a printed product key. You activate Office by selecting the Activate button and associating your purchase or offer with a Microsoft account.
If you see "Hi. Let's get your Office"
This is the https://setup.office.com/ page in your web browser. This is where you go to enter a new product key to install a new copy of Office, or to start or renew an Office 365 subscription. You must enter a Microsoft account before you can enter your product key. A Microsoft account is required for Office 365, Office 2016, and Office 2013.
If you see the Activation wizard
If you install Office 365 or Office 2016 yourself, Office will activate automatically, if possible. You will only see this wizard if Office needs your help to activate.
If you see the Activate Office screen
If you install Office 365 or Office 2016 yourself, Office will activate automatically, if possible. You will only see this screen if Office needs your Microsoft account, or work or school account, to activate. Enter your account and password to activate Office.
If you see the Enter your product key screen
If Office is asking you for a product key to activate Office, in many cases you can enter your Microsoft account instead. This is the account that you used to buy or subscribe to Office. Just select Sign in with an active account instead and enter the account you used to buy or subscribe to Office.
If you see Unlicensed Product errors
When Office becomes unlicensed, all editing features of Office are disabled. Office can become unlicensed for a number of reasons. For example, if your Office 365 subscription expires, you must renew your subscription to restore all features of Office. If Office was pre-installed on your new PC, you must start an Office 365 Home trial or buy Office to continue using Office.
