About user permissions for PerformancePoint Services

To publish PerformancePoint dashboards, you must have certain permissions assigned in Microsoft SharePoint Server 2010. Dashboard users must also have certain permissions so that they can view and use the dashboards that you deploy.

This article provides you with an overview of the permissions that are required for PerformancePoint Services in Microsoft SharePoint Server 2010. It also includes information on how to assign permissions for your dashboard content.

To view, edit, create, or publish dashboard items, such as reports, scorecards, filters, and dashboard pages, you must have certain permissions assigned in SharePoint Server. In addition, you must have certain permissions assigned in the servers that store data used for dashboard content.

SharePoint permissions

To perform tasks in Dashboard Designer, you must have the following minimum permissions in SharePoint Server 2010.

View and use PerformancePoint dashboard items that have been saved to SharePoint Server 2010.

View, assign or change user permissions for dashboard items, including any items that you create

Full Control (Site) or Site Collection Administrator

Change the server settings to use Dashboard Designer with a different PerformancePoint site collection

Read permissions.

However, to save your dashboard items in a site collection, you must have Contribute permissions assigned for that site collection. In addition, to deploy a dashboard, you must have Design permissions.

Data server permissions

Depending on the data sources that you use, you must have Read permissions assigned to you in those data sources. These Read permissions are in addition to the SharePoint permissions that you need.

For example, to view and use data that is stored in SQL Server Analysis Services, you must have at least Read permissions assigned to you in Analysis Services. And, when you use a SQL Server Reporting Services report in your dashboard, you must have at least Read permissions assigned to you in the Reporting Services report server.

Assign or change user permissions

  To view, assign, or change user permissions for dashboard items, you must have Full Control permissions. Although you can create and publish dashboard items with Design permissions, you cannot assign or change permissions for those items unless you also have Full Control (Site) or Site Collection Administrator permissions.

Use the SharePoint Permissions dialog box to assign or change user permissions for a dashboard item. You can open the SharePoint Permissions dialog box from Dashboard Designer or from the SharePoint list or document library that contains the dashboard item. The following sections describe both methods.

Edit user permissions in Dashboard Designer

  1. In the Workspace Browser, click PerformancePoint Content or Data Connections, depending on the item that you want to modify. Then, in the center pane, double-click the dashboard item to open it for editing.

  2. In the ribbon, click the Home tab, locate the Item group, and then click Permissions. A browser window opens, which enables you to view or change the SharePoint permissions for the dashboard item that you opened.

  3. Use the SharePoint permissions dialog box to modify the user permissions for your dashboard item, and then save your changes.

Edit user permissions in a SharePoint list or document library

  1. Locate the dashboard item that you want to modify in its SharePoint list or document library.

  2. Select the check box that is next to the name of the dashboard item. At first glance, you might not see a check box next to your dashboard item. The check box is visible when you put your cursor next to the Title column, which is located next to the name of the dashboard item. The ribbon appears in the SharePoint site.

  3. In the SharePoint ribbon, click List Tools, and then click Items. Locate the Manage section, and then click Document Permissions. A SharePoint Permissions dialog box opens. This enables you to view and change the user permissions for the item that you selected.

  4. Use the SharePoint Permissions dialog box to modify user permissions for your dashboard item, and then save your changes.
