The Cumulative Cost fields show the scheduled cumulative timephased cost for a task, resource, or assignment to date.

There are three categories of Cumulative Cost fields.

Data Type    Currency

Cumulative Cost (task-timephased field)

Entry Type    Calculated

How Calculated    The Cumulative Cost field for tasks is based on costs already incurred for work performed by all assigned resources on the task, combined with planned costs for remaining work on the task. These values are based on the task Cost field and added to the previous time period for the cumulative value. Cumulative cost equals cumulative cost for the previous period plus scheduled cost for this period.

Best Uses    Add the Cumulative Cost field to the timephased portion of the Task Usage view to display the running total cost for the task, combining actual and remaining costs on an ongoing basis.

Example    A task consists of 10 hours for a resource with a standard rate of $20 per hour. At the start of the task, the cumulative cost is $0. For each time period, the scheduled cost is added to the previous cost. After 1 hour, the cumulative cost is $20. After 2 hours, the cumulative cost is $40. After 3 hours, the cumulative cost is $60, and so on.

Cumulative Cost (resource-timephased field)

Entry Type    Calculated

How Calculated    The Cumulative Cost field for resources is based on costs already incurred by the resource on assigned tasks, combined with planned costs for remaining work on all assignments. These values are based on the resource Cost field and added to the previous time period for the cumulative value. Cumulative cost equals cumulative cost for the previous period plus scheduled cost for this period.

Best Uses    Add the Cumulative Cost field to the timephased portion of the Resource Usage view to display the running total cost for a resource, combining actual and remaining costs on an ongoing basis.

Example    You're tracking costs for a resource with a rate of $20 per hour. The resource is assigned to 15 different tasks throughout the duration of the project. At any time, you can use the Cumulative Cost field to see the total cost for this resource to date, which includes both actual cost and remaining cost for all assigned tasks. For each time period, the scheduled cost is added to the previous cost. After 1 hour, the cumulative cost is $20. After 2 hours, the cumulative cost is $40. After 3 hours, the cumulative cost is $60, and so on.

Cumulative Cost (assignment-timephased field)

Entry Type    Calculated

How Calculated    The Cumulative Cost field for assignments is based on costs already incurred for work performed on the assignment, combined with planned costs for remaining work on the assignment. These values are based on the assignment Cost field and added to the previous time period for the cumulative value. Cumulative cost equals cumulative cost for the previous period plus scheduled cost for this period.

Best Uses    Add the Cumulative Cost field to the timephased portion of the Task Usage or Resource Usage view to display the running total cost for an assignment, combining actual and remaining costs on an ongoing basis.

Example    An assignment consists of 10 hours for a resource with a rate of $20 per hour. At the start of the assignment, the cumulative cost is $0. For each time period, the scheduled cost is added to the previous cost. After 1 hour, the cumulative cost is $20. After 2 hours, the cumulative cost is $40. After 3 hours, the cumulative cost is $60, and so on.
