"There was a problem connecting to OneDrive" error during logon to the OneDrive sync client for Mac

Problem

Consider the following scenario: 

  • You're using Mac OS 10.11.x or a later version.

  • You’re using a federated server for authentication.

When you try to log on to the OneDrive sync app for Mac in this scenario, you receive the following error message: 

There was a problem connecting to OneDrive.

Check your internet connection and then try again.

Solution

To resolve this issue, install the updated version (version 17.3.6378.0415 or later) of the OneDrive sync app for Mac that's available in the Mac App Store. You can go to the store page to get the update, or search for "OneDrive" in the Mac App Store on your Mac.

More information

If you're using the OneDrive sync app for Mac version 17.3.6298.0108 or earlier, you aren't affected.
