“Office (64-bit) couldn’t be installed” error when you install Office 2013, Office 2016, or Office 365

You'll get this error message if you try to install the 64-bit version of Office 2013, Office 2016 Preview, Office 365, or an Office stand-alone application like Visio on a computer that already has a 32-bit version of Office.

Can't install 32-bit Office over 64-bit Office error message

Note   The preceding dialog box says that Office (64-bit) couldn't be installed because 32-bit Office programs are installed. There's a corresponding dialog box that says that Office (32-bit) couldn't be installed if you have 64-bit Office programs installed.

You'll get this error message if you try to install the 32-bit version of Office 2013, Office 2016 Preview, Office 365, or an Office stand-alone application like Visio on a computer that already has a 64-bit version of Office.

Can't install 32-bit over 64-bit Office error message

You can’t mix 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Office.

When it comes to 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Office, you have to choose one or the other—installing a combination won’t work. You can mix versions like Office 2010 and Office 2013 or Office 2016 Preview – as long as both are 32-bit or 64-bit.

So, if you’re installing Office 2013 or Office 2016 Preview alongside another version of Office, install the type that matches what you already have. For example, if you already have the 32-bit version of Office 2010 installed, install the 32-bit version of Office 2013 or Office 2016 Preview.

If you want to switch from 32-bit to 64-bit, you’ll have to uninstall the 32-bit version and then install the 64-bit version. Likewise, if you want to switch from 64-bit to 32-bit, you’ll need to uninstall the 64-bit version and then install the 32-bit version.

For example, if you have the 32-bit version of Office 2010 and you want to install the 64-bit version of Office 2013 or Office 2016 Preview and keep Office 2010 on the same computer, you’ll need to uninstall Office 2010, re-install the 64-bit version of Office 2010, and then install the 64-bit version of Office 2013 or Office 2016 Preview.

To help you decide which version to install, see Choose the 32-bit or 64-bit version of Office.
