"...Another installation is in progress..." error when installing Office

If you see this error message when installing Office, the first thing you can try is restarting your computer. Just bookmark this page in case a restart doesn't solve the issue.

We’re sorry, but we could not start your Office installation. Another installation is in progress, please try again later.

If you get the message again, first remove the OfficeclickTorun.exe, and then continue with the uninstall and reinstall using the easy fix tool.

Step 1 - Remove OfficeclickTorun.exe from the Task Manager

  1. Press Ctrl + Alt + Delete, and then select Task Manager.

  2. On the Details tab search for a file called OfficeclickTorun.exe. If you see this file, right-click it and then select End Task. Repeat this step if there is more than one of these. If you don't see this file, move on to Step 2 and uninstall and then reinstall Office.

Step 2 - Uninstall and reinstall Office

Select your browser from below to see the steps for uninstalling and reinstalling Office.

Internet Explorer

  1. Click this easy fix button to uninstall and completely clean up your Office installation.

  2. At the bottom of the browser window, select Open to open the O15CTRRemove.diagcab file.

    Note: If the file doesn’t open, choose Save > Open Folder, and then double-click the file (it should start with "O15CTRRemove") to run the easy fix tool.

  3. The Uninstall Microsoft Office wizard launches. Select Next.

  4. Select Apply this fix and follow through the rest of the screens.

    Important: If you don't see this screen, you may be using a different browser. See the steps below if you're using Chrome or Firefox.

  5. On completion of the easy fix tool, you'll get an Uninstallation successful screen, and then be prompted to restart your computer for changes to take effect. Select Next.

  6. After restarting, install Office again. Use the table below to find the correct sign in location for your version of Office.

    If you have this Office product

    Sign in to install Office

    An Office 365 subscription, such as:

    • Office 365 Home

    • Office 365 Personal

    • Office 365 University

    A one-time purchase of Office 2016 or Office 2013 such as:

    • Office Home & Student

    • Office Home & Business

    • Office Professional

    • Individual 2016 or 2013 applications such as Word, Excel, or Project

    1. Go to http://www.office.com/myaccount.

      If prompted, sign in with the email address and password associated with your copy of Office.

    2. Select Install.

    Office 365 for business subscriptions that include the desktop Office applications, such as:

    • Office 365 Business Premium (including corresponding Nonprofit plans)

    • Office 365 Small Business Premium

    • Office 365 Enterprise E3, E4, and E5 (includes corresponding Government, Education, and Nonprofit plans)

    • Office 365 ProPlus

    1. Go to https://portal.office.com/OLS/MySoftware.aspx.

      If prompted, sign in with the email address and password that you created or someone in your organization created on your behalf.

    2. Select Install.

    Note: If you're having trouble signing in, check that you're using the correct email and password. If you still can't sign in you may be using a different Office 365 service and have a different sign in location, see Where to sign in to Office 365.

Chrome

  1. Click this easy fix button to uninstall and completely clean up your Office installation.

  2. In the lower-lower left corner select the o15CTRRemove file and from the dropdown, select Show in folder.

    From the dropdown, select Show in folder
  3. Double-click the download, o15CTRRemove to run the easy fix tool.

  4. The Uninstall Microsoft Office wizard launches. Select Next.

  5. Select Apply this fix and follow through the rest of the screens.

  6. On completion of the easy fix tool, you'll get an Uninstallation successful screen, and then be prompted to restart your computer for changes to take effect. Select Next.

  7. After restarting, install Office again. Use the table below to find the correct sign in location to install your version of Office.

  3. In the upper-right browser window, select Show all downloads.

  4. In the Library, select Downloads > O15CTRRemove.digicab, and then select the folder icon.

  5. Double-click the O15CTRRemove.digicab.

  6. The Uninstall Microsoft Office wizard launches. Select Next.

  7. Select Apply this fix and follow through the rest of the screens.
