Use a screen reader to create and connect a row to a project in a roadmap in Project

This article is for people with visual or cognitive impairments who use a screen reader program such as Windows Narrator, JAWS, or NVDA with Microsoft 365 products. This article is part of the Microsoft 365 screen reader support content set where you can find more accessibility information on our apps. For general help, visit Microsoft Support.

Use Project for the web with your keyboard and screen reader to create and connect a row to a project in your roadmap. We have tested it with Narrator, but it might work with other screen readers as long as they follow common accessibility standards and techniques.

Notes:

  • New Microsoft 365 features are released gradually to Microsoft 365 subscribers, so your app might not have these features yet. To learn how you can get new features faster, join the Office Insider program.

  • To learn more about screen readers, go to How screen readers work with Microsoft 365.

  • When you use Project for the web, we recommend that you use Microsoft Edge as your web browser. Because Project for the web runs in your web browser, the keyboard shortcuts are different from those in the desktop program. For example, you’ll use Ctrl+F6 instead of F6 for jumping in and out of the commands. Also, common shortcuts like F1 (Help) and Ctrl+O (Open) apply to the web browser – not Project for the web.

Create and connect a row

After you have created a roadmap in Project Home, you can add rows and connect them to Project for the web projects.

  1. When you open a roadmap from Project Home, you hear "Roadmap name" and its name. Press the Tab key until you hear "Command toolbar, Add row," and then press Enter.

  2. Type a name for the row.

  3. Press the Tab key once and type the name or email address of the row owner. You hear the first search result when you stop typing. To move forward in the list of search results, press the Tab key. To select a result, press Enter.

  4. Press the Tab key. You hear: "Connect to a project." Press Enter to open the drop-down menu. You hear: "Project, menu item." Press Enter. The Connect to a project pane opens.

  5. To select one of your recent projects, press the Tab key until you reach it on the list, and then press Enter to select.

Tip: To search for a project that does not appear in the list, type your search term in the Search for project field.

  6. Project for the web might ask you to confirm the connection. Press the Tab key or Shift+Tab until you hear "Continue, button," and then press Enter.

  7. Project for the web starts to load the project connections. When you hear "Connect enabled" or "Connect, button," press Enter to complete the connection. The list of tasks in the selected project opens.

  8. Press the Tab key until you hear the details of the task you want, followed by "Check box status, unchecked." Press Spacebar to select the task.

  9. Repeat step 8 until you have added all the tasks you want. Then press the SR key+Spacebar once, press B until you hear "Add, button," and then press Enter to finish.
