Unable to share OneDrive files

If you can't see the option to "Share" or "View online" within the context menu, your sync client may be running with elevated privileges. This is not supported (see Invalid file names and file types in OneDrive, OneDrive for Business, and SharePoint).

Verify whether OneDrive is running with elevated privileges

To check whether OneDrive.exe is running with elevated privileges, follow these steps:

  1. Open Task Manager.

  2. Go to the Details tab.

  3. Add an Elevated column by right-clicking on top of an existing column and use the Select columns option.

  4. Check the Elevated column for OneDrive.exe and Explorer.exe processes.

Removing the Elevated privileges

If your OneDrive.exe or Explorer.exe are running with elevated privileges, as displayed above, follow these steps to resolve the issue:

  1. Set the User Account Control (UAC) to the lowest setting within the Control Panel. (See more about User Account Control (UAC).)

  2. Change the Security settings using the steps below:

    1. Run secpol.msc to open the Local Security Policy.

    2. Expand Local Policies and open the Security Options.

    3. Look for the policies regarding the User Account Control and set them as per the image below:

      Important: Adapt the local security settings according to your organization's policy.

    4. Restart the computer.

After following the steps above, the context menu should look similar to this:
