The file transfer option in the Office app lets you send files from your device to your computer and receive files from your computer or device.

Note: Per its retirement on Dec. 31, 2022, this Transfer Files feature will no longer be available.

To transfer files, do the following:

  1. In the Office app on your Android device, tap Actions and select Transfer Files.

  2. When prompted on your device, select either Send or Receive

  3. On your computer, open your web browser, and then go to the URL shown on your screen.

A page showing a QR code should now open.

  4. On your Android device, point the camera at the QR code on your computer screen, and then confirm the code on your computer to finish pairing.

  5. Next, do either of the following:

    • If you previously selected Send, select the files you want to transfer. The selected files will be transferred to your computer.

    • If you previously selected Receive, click Choose files to transfer on your computer, or drag and drop to this window the files that you want to transfer.

Tip: You can check the progress of the transfer on your device. To transfer additional files, click Choose files to transfer on your computer once more.

  6. When you have finished transferring files, close your browser, and then tap the Back button near the top left corner of your device screen to return to the Home tab.

Received files are stored in the Downloads folder on your Android phone, and images are stored in the Pictures > Office Mobile folder. You can view these files at any time from the Home tab.

Notes:

  • Your security and privacy are important to us. The Office app uses Microsoft online services to transfer files between your computer and your phone. These online services do not store any of your file content on their servers.

  • If you’re an administrator in an organization managed by Microsoft Intune and want to configure access to the File Transfer and Share Nearby features in the Office app, see Manage collaboration experiences using Office for iOS and Android with Microsoft Intune.
