If you’re using OneNote together with Outlook, you can easily bring important email messages and meeting invitations from Outlook into your notes by using the Send to OneNote feature.

Note: The information below applies to the Windows versions of OneNote and Outlook.

Enable Send to OneNote in Outlook

Before you can use Send to OneNote with OneNote for Windows 10, do the following:

  1. Click File > Options in the Microsoft Outlook desktop app.

  2. In the Outlook Options dialog box that opens, in the left sidebar, click Advanced.

  3. On the right side of the Outlook Options dialog box, scroll down to the Other heading, and then make sure that the check box labeled Use Send to OneNote with OneNote for Windows 10, if available is selected.

  4. Click OK.

Tip: You can revert this setting at any time by following these steps again and then deselecting the check box labeled Use Send to OneNote with OneNote for Windows 10, if available.

Send Outlook items to OneNote

In your desktop version of Microsoft Outlook, do the following:

  1. Open the item that you want to send to OneNote by doing either of the following:

    • In your Inbox (or any other mailbox folder), double-click to open the email message that you want to send to OneNote.

    • In your Calendar, double-click to open the meeting that you want to send to OneNote.

  2. On the ribbon near the top of the currently open message or meeting window, click Send to OneNote.

    Note: If you're sending a meeting invitation to OneNote for which you are the original organizer, the Send to OneNote button will be labeled Meeting Notes instead. You can click either button to continue sending your selected meeting to OneNote.

  3. In the OneNote task pane that appears, select the notebook and the section where you want your selected Outlook item to be saved.

  4. Click Save.

The subject line of each imported message or meeting becomes the title of that item's associated page in OneNote, and the date and time stamp of the original item is retained. This makes it easy to search for it again later.

After sending messages or meetings from Outlook to OneNote, you can freely move their pages around in your notebook, and you can copy or move any of these pages between different sections and to any of your other notebooks.

  • I’m using OneNote 2016. How can I restore the previous COM Add-in? — In your desktop version of Outlook, click File > Options > Add-ins. Next, under Manage, make sure that COM Add-ins is selected, and then click Go. In the COM Add-ins dialog box that opens, make sure that OneNote Notes about Outlook Items is selected. Next, return to the Outlook Settings dialog box by clicking File > Settings, and then make sure the option labeled Use Send to OneNote with OneNote for Windows 10, if available is not selected.

    Tip: If you reinstalled Office 2016 and OneNote 2016 was not included, see Install or reinstall OneNote 2016 for Windows.

Note: The information below applies to the Mac versions of OneNote and Outlook.
